2.8 upgrade to 3ltr?

Hi guys
Have noticed lately that the price has dropped down for the Surf 3 ltr motor from import wreckers.
My question is does this motor bolt into early Hilux's fitted with the 3L and use the same engine mounts/bellhousing? and if so can it be made into a non electronic motor?
Also can the 5L engine be used as well as a bolt straight into the same.
Just looking for other options to replace the 3L

afaik the main difference between the 3L and the 5L motors is the engine mounts. provided you use a 5L not the 5L-e then it should be just a matter of new mounts. i can't remeber if you need the bellhousing of it as well.

for the 3 litre turbos its a major. you will need the donor motor complete with ECU etc

the G52 gearbox wont handle the power output of the 3.0 turbo- thats why they fitted teh R-151 gearbox from factory.

Ive been all over my old mans prado TD with a measuring tape.... im thinking of seeing if i can pick up a halfcut prado TD and dropping the engine and gearbox into my 2.8D since after 300,000kms, my engines getting a bit tired!

by it works
Im fitting a 1kz(2001 3.0l turbo) to a 93 hylux right now, i have done a few now they are a lot of work they take 5 day to fit including moving the engine mounts and wiring up the ecu. every thing is different, length shape mounts radiator crossmember exhaust tail shafts ect. i have also put a 5l injector pump on a 1kz and it worked had to make the throttle links up as well so i dont see why you cant put a 5l pump on a surf 3.0l engine.

Bitch of a job putting in a 3lt TD into a 3L car.

The 3L has bugger all elcectrics where as the 5L-e has a sensor on everything. The 3tlr will shit all over the 2.8 in power but its a big job to swap them over.

Would not just put a stock 3ltr in as they are no quicker then a 2.8.

You will need a donor car for the swap, as you will have to swap from the dash forward.

EARLY 3.0TD's were a lot easier, as they didnt have the fly by wire, you could just hide the puta in the dash, hook up the throttle cable and about a dozen connectors and they worked.

When toyota went to Fly by wire on their 1KZ-TE, things got a LOT harder, which means if you want the prado TD- intercooler gives you 96kw/343nm, then you need to either turn your 3L into a fly by wire, or work out how to make a cable operated TPS from an early turbo lux fit your prado motor :S

What is the big difference between 3L and the 5L, can a 5L be fitted and then turbo'd?
Can I use my original pump and other acc, exhaust?, Surf 2.4 turbo manifold or 1KZ turbo manifold fit the 5L?
Just trying to find out what would work best

motor swap

Just turbo the 3L and run it until it dies.
Then do the 5L swap and you have a turbo already to go on the 5L :D

Only thing i don't like about the 5L is the electronics, the 3L can basically be a submarine if you have a snorkel and there is jack all that can be damaged. The 5L has no more power than a 3L, i know two 3Ls that used to beat a 5L before they rolled

3L motor - 60kw

5L motor - 70kw

the was a 5L, and a 5L-E

The 5L is just as good a submarine as the 3L was....

Tho ive been looking at pranged D4D hilux's at the auction sites! :D

Doen the 3L to 1KZ-TE swap, had it in and running in a day and a half and people off this board will verify that fact. Although i had the 2000 model 1KZ-TE which is much easier to do than the later fly by wire models. Would recommend the conversion though...cheap and easy...good increase in power and make the lux usefull.

what did you pay for the engine itself?

So I just wanted to get this clear. A 5L can be fitted into a 3L car easily? ie. same bellhousing, and everything will boltup without any dramas. Only thing needed to change is you'll need to use is 5L engine mounts? Does the airbox plumbing, manifold etc all line up the same? Alternator, a/c compressor, steering pump? A 5L motor is only $300 more than a 3L that's pretty cheap to an extra 10kw or +10% power.

This will also depend on wether your lux has ifs or solid axle front end if you have solid front end you will need to change the sump over as you wont have the clearance if you have ifs front end.In other words if yours is already ifs no problem if solid you will need to take the sump off the old 2.8 3L and put onto the 5L also will need to change exhaust manifold over either way. You will not be that impressed with the 5L as said above, I have passed 5L before pulling up hawksbury and mooney brige here in Sydney heading up north on the F3. Myn is not turbo. If I was you I would turbo what you have and as said above keep going untill it dies, I have seen the old 2.8 do 400/500 with a turbo and no problems providing you dont over boost a safe boost would be 8 pound and will not give you any problems what so ever. yeah that 400-500k life on the 3L was what I was told too. Mine's shit itself at 270k. There's no guarantee specially if the previous tightarse lazy ferret owner only changes the oil every 10000 kms. Anyway will probably get it reco'd now as it seems the best value for money.
