trans case tech ?
I believe a part time 4wd transfer can be modified to allow u to run front wheel drive only as well as rear or 4wd. Anyone got any info?
Re: trans case tech ?
very few cases can be done out of the box, the rest will need a rear dissconnect on the rear driveshaft or major mods to the gutssteel wrote:I believe a part time 4wd transfer can be modified to allow u to run front wheel drive only as well as rear or 4wd. Anyone got any info?

So what you need is a case capable of running 2 wheel drive low range.
With a rear (front diff) disconnect as so you can dig front or rear.
Answer an Lt 230 with the centre diff moded as so you can select low range rear wheel drive which will in turn drive the front diff Then run a disconnect for the front diff so when you lock the centre you can disconnect the front and rear digg as well!
Cheers jamie

well, i don't really need low range when running on rear axle. im not wanting to build a rockcrawler for comp work, rather a multi-use toy for play, therefore i want rear engine [ V8 ], auto trans, dual range transfer, ability to run in rwd for high speed fun & 4wd for when the sand gets powdery. im thinking of using 2 rangie chassis front halves [joined], chev 350,turbo 400, transfer ?, flipped 60 series axles & beach buggy type tube frame. i wondour if such a vehicle could slot into a class of long course off-road racing?
it's an aftermarket case based on one of the dana cases. they can do this out the box.steel wrote:OK, does this tranfer case come with this talent or does it still need modding to achieve it? Atlas, I'm not real familiar wih it, I think this is a aftermarket replacement for a Dana, correct?
you can also mod a dana (i think 300... but there is a type of dana i know of) to do the same
and you can mod np205's (or was it 203's?) to do it

If you are using an arse-about driveline (rear engine, center gearbox, front tcase setup), using the rear drive flange to drive the front wheels and the front flange for the rear drive, it really doesnt matter what tcase you use as most of them have seperate hi/lo and 4WD/2WD selectors. What you need is a double selector built for the tcase that is capable of individually actuating the selectors.
What you will end up with is:
4WD (selected) + front hubs unlocked = RWD
2WD (selected) + front hubs locked = FWD
4WD (selected) + front hubs locked = 4WD
With any combination able to be in hi or lo ratio
If the chassis is light enough, you could go a CommoV6/t700/Hilux or Patrol tcase. Cheap as, with plenty of spares around

If you are running flipped diffs, the pinion bearing is much higher, and does not have the different oil galleries that HP diffs do. If offroad the oil will probably splash round, but you may still have problems with lack of lube to bearings. Esp at speed on smoother trails.
