4.2L Turbo GU
4.2L Turbo GU
What years did the GU's come out in 4.2L Turbo Diesels?
Pretty sure they came out in the GU's. I'm talking the wagons, not the utes though.
Also how would those compare to the 95-97 Multi-vavle Turbo Diesel 80 Series?
Do the 4.2L Turbo's have any weaknesses or problems at all?
Just want to get both sides of the story from nissan and toyota people.
Cheers
Todd

Mate the ZD30 3.0ltr turbo diesel go like shit from a shovel with very minimal work but have had their problems in the earlier models. Do a search for more info on the year models and the problem they had.
It really depends on what you would like it for. If you are considering towing then I would definately get a TD42T

The claim was from a toyota driving friend, so just had to find out one way or another. All a part of research.bogged wrote:I'll take Rubbish for $100 thanks.Toddles wrote:told the 3L 4cyl Turbo Diesels have more power etc and are better then the 4.2L 6cyl Turbo diesels.
The claims true or just rubbish?
What year they start making intercooled 4.2L turbo Diesel patrols. The 99, 2000 ones aren't from what I can tell, but have seen a 03 one that was. So did they start in 03 or in 01 or 02?
Also like the cruisers do they have a centre diff with a diff lock switch?
I think I really should research these more.

Patrols are part-time 4wd's. They have hubs. If you know cruisers. They are a similar setup to a POV pack (STD). So where as most of the cruiser range are AWD(fulltime), 4wd-hi, 4wd-lo. All Patrols are 2wd, 4wd-hi, 4wd-lo.Toddles wrote:What year they start making intercooled 4.2L turbo Diesel patrols. The 99, 2000 ones aren't from what I can tell, but have seen a 03 one that was. SO the nissan needs the hubs to be locked and the transfercase lever to be pulled back into 4wd-hi.
As for comparing the Nissan Turbo diesels.
The pick seems to be the TD42T (4.2lt turbo). Not sure when they cam out. But they are a very old design engine and very basic. They are pretty much the same as what they where when they came out in the GQ's in 87.
In the GU range there are 2 different types of TD42T. The earlier ones (maybe 99-04) where just turbo'd. But after 04, they needed to fit a intercooler and an elctronic thingy to the injector pump to help it pass emissions.
Overall its no rocketship. But is a very reliable engine. People with this engin range have seen well into the million kays on the clock. On std engines. With no major servicing (that includes factory injectors over a million clicks- I didnt think they would last that long but they did), other than oil and filters. Thats not to say some havent been POS and died with less than 100 000km. Anything can be killed.
As for the other Nissan engines. Did hear rumours of some of the 2.8lt TDI's doing head gaskets. And the 3lt had major problems in the early stages but seems to be good now. My brother has one and he has had no issues so far. Think his is a 03-04 model GU.
As for the LC100 factory turbo diesel. Like most of the other factory toyota turbos in the LC range form years gone buy. This engine is fantastic. It craps all over the nissan engine. It has crap loads more power and torque, Better fuel economy. Only real problem is its in a Toyota. There where issues with the motors in the early 80seires models (bigend bearings). Think it just likes good oil. and keep changin oil and filters at 5000km (TD42T nissan likes this to).
THOUGHT FOR THE DAY....
All the reports have the earlier GU TD42T as much better than the TD42Ti (intercooled) after some mods -- aftermarket intercooler, fatter turbo dump pipe, replaced exhaust with mandrel bends, and tuned to suit with increased fuel and a bit more boost.
That would be the way i would go, if I was doing a GU turbo diesel.
The 3.0 TD is almost at max power/torque from factory, you can only really add a DTronic to it, as they are pulling high boost factory (up to 22psi from the variable vane turbo, from what I have read), so they are at the higher end.... whereas the 4.2 TD is much lower boost (about 8 - 10 psi at a guess).
And be wary of early 3.0TD GU's, they have had their problems......
