My clutch is due for replacement so I am considering replacing the clutch & manual box with an Auto and I am after people's opinion and experience.
To set the seen I have an aftermarket Turbo HZJ80 running 35s, lockers, etc, etc and I know the pros and cons between anto & manuals so I do not wish to debate which is better here.
What I am after is has anyone here who whas put an auto behind a similar motor?
I would like to stay with Toyota parts but am open to options. I here there are both hydrualic and electrically controled gearboxes. In my mind the hydrualic would be easier to install. But slosh has suggested that one of the models had a computer that only controlled the gearbox not both gearbox and motor??? Anyone know about this and what model if ture?
Any help in this would be appreciated....

Thoughts on replacing the manual with an auto in HZJ80

What year is your truck?
Any auto trans complete "kit" from a wrecker from a donor HDJ80 will work, as even the TD's had no electronics to integrate with, just a TPS on top of the injection pump you'd need to adapt. You'd also need the driveshafts as auto is longer. Depending on how thorough you want to be, the t/case also has an extra "neutral" warning switch, and the dash cluster also has the auto selector lights and t/case neutral and trans temp warning lights. Don't forget auto radiator with cooler, plus additional cooler in front.
The early A442F's up till late '92 (had PRND321 on console and no OD button) would work on an earlier vehicle if you don't have the electronic speedo.
If you have a later truck, the later auto is better I believe, but has more electronics (i.e. PRN321 on console plus OD button).
