15x8 on 91 Hilux legal???

Hi Guys,

Am looking at getting 15x8 rims on my 91 Dual Cab Lux and was wondering this is roadworthy/legal.

I rang insurance and they said as long as the hilux is roadworthy according to vicroads this is fine, however, I rang vicroads and they were stuff all help and would not commit to any direct answers and suggested I try ringing Toyota. So I rang toyota and they said they didnt know as they only keep information for the newer models and suggested I try a tyre dealer.

I am going to be running 31's which is one of the most common sizes tyre run, reason I am going 15x8 is because I want black sunnies which I have been told dont come in 15x7 in correct offset.

Any help is appreciated.

Buy white 15x7s and spray them black?

Other than that, speak to an engineer, he will be able tell you based on the Vic-Roads rules or ADR's whether it is legal or not.

Vic-Roads and the RTA in NSW are useless for getting unformation out of. At least you know that now.

i doubt you'd be pinged for it unless the tyres stick out heaps and scrub
on 31s, nobody will notice... but you're probably better off running 7s anyway

i have a feeling resprayed white 15x7s will be cheaper than black 15x8
and also you'll be less likely to lose a bead

you will have no probs with 31's as under the new rules they are only 2" bigger than the standard 29's..... but in saying that you are "ment" to get it engineered and in doing so he will just make note of the rim size on the papers.

dont know if your fully insured or not but if your with the racv they will not insure it with 8's on it as they will be too wide, even 3rd party insurance against hitting some one else could be a problem if it arises (hope it doesnt) as far as you putting them on then some thing happens eg run up the arse of a bmw and they might refuse to pay up leaving you in the shit. Not sure if you are 100% on that one, I am insured with RACV and gave them a call and 4 people I spoke to said that as long as it was roadworthy according to Vicroads then it was OK by them, apparently the rules have changed about 12 - 18mths ago.

It used to be that you could only increase by 1" on standard, but seeing as now that so many people are putting on aftermarkets wheels on their cars and 4by they have changed there regs to bring it into line with Vicraods.

The problem I am having is trying to get a straight answer out of Vicroads, one guy their told me to call a tyre dealer and they would be able to tell me what is legal???

Any ways thanks guys, I am sure alot you who have fitted bigger wheels /tyres have gone through the same thing.

Vic roads web site has all the info. Basically you can go 1" over widest standard rim.
Read your glove box sticker or manual and it will give widest rim fitted standard. If its 6" then 7" is OK.
If 7" then 8" is OK BUT track cant be increased by more than I think 25mm so reversed type rims are out.
You will also need to ensure if they go in as well that they dont hit on steering arm etc.

ask for it in writing. When you get to court, adn say "4 people on the phone told me..."... who are they going to believe?
