RECAP TYRES??

Post by macy918 »

i've been offered some 255/70R16 Mongrel recaps on a set of disco rims for $285 a corner. Are recaps worth considering? i've not heard of mongrels before, are they good tyres? they look a bit like one of the simex's?? would i need to do any mods to fit them under a disco (series 1) with a 2" spring lift?? (i've checked the sticky tyre tech, the size is not listed). given that i would still have to drive some distance on road to get to tracks etc. would i be better off just running 1 set of decent muddies like BFG's on my current rims to use for everything rather than swapping rims and tyres between my AT's for the road and the mongrels for off road??
any help would be gratefully recieved!!

Personally I don't like mongrels....but there are a lot of people who have them that think they are great. It is a pain to swap wheels whenever you go offroad but it will save you wearing down your muddies on the hardtop and it will be much nicer driving around on your A/T's.

The size is 30" so it should fit on your Disco but you will probably have to adjust your steering bumpstops to stop them rubbing on full lock.
Thanks,

Adam

I dont think its a great offer. U can pick up disco rims 4 around $80-$90 each then brand new simex mt or sumitomo mt 4 around $170 a piece.
I have blown out recaps at 100kph and that that was the end of the recaps 4 me. :bad-words:

Hey mate I would like to say I love the mongrels  . I dont know what the 16" are like but I run 15"x32" and so far so good. I just run them on the weekends on my classic rangie and they are as tuff as. Got double side walls cause they use another tyre to rap the tread and side wall on to. The remoulds have come along way. They are speed rated to 120km/h and arent to bad on the road, A bit noisey but would not use them as a daily driver. Awsome offroad run them down to 12psi work a treat in most 4x4 situations not the best on the market but heaps cheaper I paid $190 each. any ways thats my 2 cents.

cheers shaneo
