td5 turbo boost / leak?

Post by Exteme5 »

Hi there landie people.
Anyone know what boost pressure the TD5 runs as standard?

I'm looking for a mysterious noise/leak from turbo area? :?
- and I am going to fit boost gauge to check pressure, except I don't know what it should be at...

and also where is the best place for a pyrometer gauge?

thanks,
Dion

I'm not sure, but I think about 17-19psi boost.

The noise leak is probably from the manifold. It seems that the studs can crack and then the manifolds ward which results in an awsome turbo noise, but a big exhaust leak. If you open the bonnet and watch while someone revs it, you will probably see the exhaust come out.

If the manifold has warped, you will be able to see a missing nut/stud on one of the end 4 bolt holes of the exhaust manifold. If there is a missing nut or stud, you get the pleasure of removing the manifold and getting it machined flat again, as its pretty much gauranteed to be warped in that situation - I believe sometimes the warping of the manifold is what causes the stud to break. Which is also fun, removing the stud - usually the broken piece won't budge with an Eze Out, until you have drilled most of the stud out, and you end up having to helicoil the hole.

Pretty ridiculous design in the manifold really, has one very short runner in the middle, and then longer ones to the outer exhaust ports. If you were in the hunt for a little extra power, and boost at lower RPM, the solution would be to get a custom manifold made up with equal length (or at least closer than factory), which would solve the warping issue, and have performance benefits also. would cost a bit more than just getting the existing manifold machined, but of course there is quite a bit of potential gain - depends on what you want from the car.

The noise is (now very) intermittent, only occurs under load / boost occasionally..
It sounds like a dry bearing squeal of death (turbo seems fine)..
have been told that an air leak from turbo outlet can sound similar..
could have been belt slip too, but that seems fine..
I would have thought an exhaust leak from manifold would sound different.
Am reasonably sure manifold is ok.

Noise started last weekend on a trip to Melbourne, then dissapeared while vehicle was being serviced...(so mechanic couldn't find it either!)
Trip home had it occur briefly a coupla times.
I'm thinking it may be a small leak caused by heat soak/load (3-4hrs hwy driving and towing).

or just bad carma...

Almost 100% a manifold leak. Buy a whole set of studs and locknuts, DEFINATELY have to mill the manifold face, and allow yourself about 3 hours. My advice is not to attempt to drill out any broken studs unless you are good at it. Call a mobile stud repairs person, I have one in Hobart who can do all mine within a few hours of calling him, for about $88 including callout.
You only want to do this job once, so do it right.

Agree exactly with JustinC. The exhaust gasket can make that high pitched squeal when the manifold has warped - its like the old trick with a gumleaf, the exhaust pressure causes the gasket to vibrate at a high frequency.

Have you put the manifold gasket on yet?? If not Why Not?

For a small fee I'll come and do it.......
