How low is too low?
Has anybody heard of a 4wd with such low gearing that it can idle into a tree and just start turning the wheels in place rather than stalling? I suppose it would be most impressive if it could happen on bitumen, but any surface would do...

Re: How low is too low?
Would climbing trees make it less or more likely to fall over than climbing rocks?N*A*M wrote:mine would just start climbing the treeTriangle wrote:Has anybody heard of a 4wd with such low gearing that it can idle into a tree and just start turning the wheels in place rather than stalling? well spotted dogbreath - that photo was published in (US) Fourwheeler magazine about 10 years ago or so- I have it somewhere.
aS to how low is too low - it all depends on what you are trying to drive and what you are driving it with. Greg's sierra runs about 120:1 and is sweet at that, but most sierras are happy at 80-90:1. Greg's car runs a 660 which makes relatively little torque below 3000rpm, but will rev to 9000 rpm, so it makes the shorter gearing work. 120:1 in a diesel, for instance, would be useless for anything except pure crawling - sooner or later you need to bump up a ledge or something and then the gearing becomes your enemy.
