Had a look at Ranger Cam's clunky drivetrain the other week. Found a couple of uni's in pretty average condition. This uni was more flogged than I though, when we took it out 2 ends of the cross piece where rounded over where they had been rattling around in the caps. The circled bit is where the yoke is worn from the other part of the yoke rubbing on it. Basically this is where the power was being transferred through One cap had a big piece missing out the side too. All circlips where in place, the pic was taken after we started taking it apart.
Sorry it's not much tech, just thought i'd share. This is the closest I get to seeing wheeling carnage these days
EDIT: just thought of some tech input. You know those little grease nipples that are on uni joints? Well they're so you can connect a grease gun and fill the joint with grease. Ah yes grease, with it's wonderful lubricating properties, will keep the joint servicable for thousands of kilometers. Unlike this one, hey Cam
yes... well.... thanks mate! you will be happy to know they are all greesed now.
you did fail to mention that the whole joint pretty much fell appart in our hands when we removed it. So I think we did get to it just in time, seeing that I drive 120 km to work each day on the motorway. Could have been nasty!
I do still have the chewwed out uni joint ( I think I might frame it!) I should take a pic of it and post it on here.
oh PS... don't get your newuni joints at REPCO. They are probably the dearest place you can buy them, I didn't have a choice at the time!
Are you guys getting the greasable ones? I don't think I have seen any non-original u-joints that aren't greasable. Not that that is a bad thing, just curious.
