what to look for
im seriously thinking about getting rid of my junk and getting a 110ute of 200tdi vintage as i see a few going around 10 10.5k what should i be looking for engine and transmission wise. from what i gather as long as the tbelt has been sorted the tdi is prety stout. but what about the trans where these the ones where the output splines ect got slopy ect?. all i need to do is convince the other half to let me get the loan to get one.
range rover & series one landy!
i dont know what all the pannic is about the timing belts, if one does break, theres not much damage anyway, 8 pushrods, (less than 10 bucks each) and the occasional rocker arm. everything else you would change anyway when you do change the belt in the first place.
look for backlash in the rear axles by removing the cap at the end of the hub and rock the car back and forth with the handbreak on. This can be a good bargaining point. And new axles can be bought for about 80 bucks each.
If the car has done any beach work check for rust in the front outriggers around where the firewall bolts on and the rear crossmember (passenger side rots more as the diesel filler is on the drivers ) also bottom of the doors.
Lots more, but thats all cars in general.

Hi, mine is a Disco and a 300TDi but the principles are the same. The 200Tdi is a less problematic engine in terms of the timing belt, it wasnt until the 300Tdi came out in 94 that the problems arose and even then there was a fix kit available. As long as the belt has been changed thats fine. As for the rest, i have found the rest of the drive train in my disco to be pretty good, and provided the G/B and T/C oil has been looked after and not left in without service it should be good. Mine has done 200000km and as far as i know is still on the original clutch and it still shifts smooth as. I did have a T/C leak but pulled it out and the leak but in putting back in i damaged the seal and now it leaks from a different spot Hope this helps. Matt
Land Rovering its the most fun you can have with your pants on.
the 200 tdi does tend to do head gaskets at about 110,000 miles, about 179,000 k's. They do it at number 4 oil way. Not a problem but make sure you get a landy gen one as they are differant as land rover found it was a problem, and changed the gasket.
But apart from that it is a bullet proof engine and will go on for ever and way better than the 300 tdi

'92 Rangie Sherwood/turbo intercooled isuzu4BD1 /ACE/ full leather/2.5" exh/2.5" body lift/DeCarbon shocks/LR tanks/LT95 back in and OK now, Sals conversion soon...
My 90 went at about 182,000 k's on the motorway on the way to a winch challenge. I was lucky a Landy garage in Oxford started the head gasket change at 5 pm and finished it at 5.45 and we were on our way again at 6pm. It was like a pit stop on F1. There were 3 mechanics on the job.Martin R wrote:Me too, our 200TDI has just done the head gasket at 174,000kls. Number 4 oil way. $2100 later she is good as new....
Unbealiveable it cost me just the price of a headgasket kit and $50 for the boys. Said that someone had help him when he was in sh*t and he was passing it down the line. Luycky Lucky night.
This pic was taken the morning after the head gasket change on the event
