60ser 5th gear

a mate from work has just brought a 60 and has a problem of it jumping out of 5th everytime he backs off.
what is the problem and how do we go about fixing it? easy or pain in the arse job.

i just changed the gearbox in dads 60. it was jumping out of a few gears and getting real hard to select them too. Was told that the selectors or summat were shagged and box needed rebuild.
500 bucks for second hand low mileage jobby thanks Dumbdunce

It will be a worn 5th gear syncro... i had this problem a few years back.
Apparently it's a common problem with those boxes!!!!!

It is a common problem. Not sure about the synchro worn, however excessive end float due to wear will make it worse.
You also need to have a real good look at the 5th gear selector rod, as Toyota changed the detent and fork position on the rod on later boxes (updated part) which alleviates the fault.

Its a common problem ,the 5th gear is narrow and when there worn they jump out.You can buy a wider aftermarket gear that fixes the problem but there is no easy fix it all still has to come apart.Call George at greenaways gearboxes and he will be able to explain it all properly.0266509300 or 1800 00 11 22 thats a free call number.

Had the same problem in my old 60. Wasnt he syncro, they had to machine and bush something to do with the gear as it was narrow (as stated) or something of the sorts.
Cost me $700 inc remove / replace at the time.

Can normally be fixed by spending less than $50, replace both gear stick bushes ( the pivot one and the one on the end that moves the selector ) 9 time out of 10 this fixes it because as they wear it doesn't move 5th fully into the detent the second thing ive done is remove the 5th gear detent spring plug and put a 2mm long spring spacer and refit the plug and it holds in much better.
