Broken camshaft

It's been a while since I've been in here. Poor old feroza is sitting on the road side with a busted camshaft and god knows what else melted/shattered/bent. About to start the autopsy. I suppose I'd best start looking for a new head.

How do you break a camshaft anyway?

Fun, fun, fun. :)

Are you sure it is a broken camshaft?

I thought i had broken my crankshaft a few years back. Turns out i had sheared the key in the timing pulley on the end of the crankshaft.

Therefore there was no drive to the camshaft, valves didn't move and pistons did. CRUNCH...... bent valves. Cost about $1200 to repair.

Might be worth checking this pulley mate.

Hmmm... I think that my camshaft is indeed a little outside of spec.

Sheared at the pulley end of the camshaft.

Looks like things got a bit warm in there.

That is a question I may be able to answer once I've pulled the head. Possible warped head I suppose. The last time she stopped (before the breakdown that is) there was a disconcerting 'clink' as I walked away from the car, I remember thinking... "funny!"

Then drove up a very steep road with no obvious problems only to lose her after about 7km of mildly undulating road.

Sourced a recon for $660 + timing belt + gasket... might replace that pulley while I'm at it. I'll be checking out them oil galleries and perhaps drop the sump.

There goes the weekend. :)
