80 Series Shakes

Hi

I have a 1992 80 series 1HDT landcruiser GXL. and have a wobbling problem.
The vehicle has a 3 inch lift, 32Inch BFG AT's. adjust panhards, new steering dampener, new front and rear brakes.

at around 90-100km/h the car star wobbling like something is about to fall off the car. The wobbles stay till over 120km/h.

to try and fix this so far I have

- replaced the front radius arm bushes (with offset castor bushes)
- Had the front hubs rebuilt + wheel Bearings
- had the tyres Balanced & rotated (the tyres appear to have warn un evenly and have become slightly 'egg shaped'
- a wheel alignment done
- the universal joints replaced
- handbrake adjusted (someone told me that this can cause a wobble in through the car can anyone confirm this?)
- I am currently getting the sway bar links extended to put that back in
- the rear diff arm bushes are only slightly warn, and i have been told that they do not require replacement.

So I plan on buying some new tyres in the next fortnight or so.
But I am wondering if anyone can shed some light onto this before i go shell out on some new tyres that I may not need.

Check the lock nut is up tight on the adj panhard, mine had the wobbles the other day and i found the lock nut was loose..

get your wheels reballanced like change the itrs around on the rims i recently just got new tires and the old ones were real out of ballance and now its sweet :D try it and tell me how it goes

I would check ur panhard bushes or they may even be loose like RV said..

when panhard bushes flog out they cause the car to wobble

Panard Bushes Panard Bushes Panard Bushes Panard Bushes Panard Bushes. I have found the std Toyota ones to be the best, on visual inspection the may seem o/k but replace them any way. I dont like the urathane ones as the seem to wear and get loose.
THERES ONLY ONE SUBSTITUTE FOR CUBES AND THATS MORE and if you want more inchs stroke it !!!!!!!!!!!

I to have what I call the death shakes, but mine occur at 40-60 once over that it is fine. Been slowly rebuilding front end, new radius arm bushes, new king pin bearings, new tyres and rims. On the weekend when replacing all tie tie rod ends I found out my RTC steering damper completely shagged..... Now I know where that problem was coming from.

I had similar issues on a previous 75series troopy. It turned out that on this vehicle the rims had buckles in them. Once they were replaced, no problems. I would suggest you grab someone else's rims & tyres that are straight and take them for a test run and see what happens before laying out the cash for new tyres.....

Try the shock absorbers. Take them out & try and compress them. If they compress easily they are stuffed. See if you can borrow a set and swap them over for a trial.

Rip off those egg tyres and put on some known good ones...try it...if it fixes the problem...get the tyres looked at...if they are wearing unevenly,. you could have tread seperation, where the tread lifts fron the steel belts, and you get a spot on the tyre wearing quicker than the rest...this is a warrantable condition...if it is whats happening, take it to the distributor of that tyre brand and jump up and down.

dow50r your comments brought back some well suppressed memories.

I once had a similar issue, a vibration at the higher end speeds. I pulled over and crawled all around the vehicle and could not find the problem.....

Eventually some mechanics on the mine I was working on found the problem... the tyre was starting to seperate and had created some buldges in the tyre. Replaced tyre, no more problems.

As I said grab someone elses tyres and see what happens......

If I drive around with the shocks set soft, I will have bump steer... then If doing the right speed and hit the right bump, the wobbles will start.

Andrew, Ive got plates... all I have to do is set the shocks to at least 7 and presto, the bump steer is gone. Im happy with that.

Was only suggesting that maybe BLC's shocks could be a bit faded ??

Yes I will confirm that. If the handbrake is over adjusted they get a terrible vibration through the entire vehicle like a wheel is about to fall off. Usually at around 40-60 km/h but sometimes only at higher speeds.
If you have a concern that this is the problem then back off the adjustment IN THE BRAKES, not the cable and drive it again. Don't try readjusting it and driving, just back it right off start from scratch.
You problem does sound more like a panhard problem though.

Missed the "EGG SHAPED" tyre bit..... Replace your eggs with tyres before you do anything else. I think a tyre gains something like 1 kg of weight for every 5 mm of diameter at 60 k's an hour.. Can't remember how it goes.. anyway an out of round tyre shouldn't have been rotated to the back it should have been replaced!

just a thought............about 1000ks after fitting my 5in kit with snake arms f&r whenever i hit a bump or pothole the steering wheel would go balistic and i would have to stop then restart. after going to a few mechanics and 2 well known engineering shops all with the big sell for high steer conversion etc i even changed my damper from toughdog rtc for a monroe but it was worse.

finally got under the truck myself and figured it had to be something simple since nothing looked broked and found both front panhard bolts not even finger tight. got the breaker bar onto them and its been sweet as ever since.

ps: i put my old toughdog damper back on also. the monroe was crap.

Ok

inspected the bushes on the panhard bars (took the panhards off at each end and had a really good look) they appear to be in perfect condition.

backed the handbrake off all the way like ruffy said.. and it seems to have helped it heaps... it still shakes a lil bit at 110km/h but I'll put that down to the tyres...

getting new ones this week coming.
