I'm interested in any comments about running a detroit soft locker in the rear , and a tru trac in the front of my RR. Can I have some help with this via personal experiencess?
Thanks, JC

You had better factor in Jacmac or Maxi axles anyway, as you WILL break standard ones.
I had a Detroit in a 2 door . From memory it cost about 1450 fitted by Kraft Diffs at Parramatta. BUT I soon had to buy Jacmac axles which I think cost 700 including broaching the side splines of the centre.
So a Maxi Drive is not far off the price. I have one in my current car and prefer it to the Detroit.
For Detroit was auto operation.
Against Detroit was
Hard to turn in mud as would remain locked eg up hill around a hairpin.
On muddy road , the back would follow the slope in the road as both wheels spinning. Used to drive kilos looking out drivers window.
On acceleration say up hill, would tighten up line if changing gear in curve.
In carparks would clunkety clunk around corners, and sometimes when taking off from stopsign /lights , there would be an almighty BANG which would scare the sh1t out of passengers.
Mine was 1st generation soflocker, later are supposed to better for noise.

Thanks Phillip,
I'll maybe even run two Tru TRacks to avoid these probs. I'll have a salisbury in the rear ex defender, and a fine spline in the front anyway.

Justin, the sals MD locker is a LOT cheaper than a rover locker. When I bought mine, it was 1200 for the sals MD complete and 1800 for the rover. So an MD locker for a sals is probably the same price (or cheaper) as a detroit???justinC wrote:Thanks Phillip,

Hmmmm, I'll ring Mal during the week Ben, thanks. I haven't asked him for a price on the Sals MD yet, only the rover one.
As Michael said earlier, a true trac in the front would also be pretty helpful.
Has anyone here used one in a RR before?

I have a detroit (not really sure what generation but think it is old style) in the rear of my 80 series and it also does the bang fairly regularily. can anyone explain why this is happening and possible side effects (ie busted axles/axle spline maybe?). ps same locker used to be in my mid wheel base cruiser, this bang thing didn't happen as oftenPhilip A wrote:... and sometimes when taking off from stopsign /lights , there would be an almighty BANG which would scare the sh1t out of passengers...
Bluey
I have a detroit locker in a Salisbury Diff in my stage 1 I have been very impressed with it, Yes it does bang occasionally but I havent seen mud or rain in the Centre for a long time so havent seen any negative handling.
While on the subject has anyone ever broken standard 24 spline axles by using a detroit in a Salisbury? I have kept a close eye on mine and they havent twisted but Im wondering if I should be buying some Maxi Drive Axles.
