SJ80 Rear Diff Replacement Options
SJ80 Rear Diff Replacement Options
Hey all,
Over the last couple of weeks a whine from my rear diff has emerged and is getting louder by the day (accelerating). If i slightly back off the power, it sounds like a grindstone.
This may be due to wear and tear, but i know ive probably accelerated the process somehow.
Obviously being an SJ80, spare parts are going to be an issue. So im just wondering what other options are available? Whether i can modify a SJ70 diff to suit etc. As much as i would like to throw hilux diffs under it, i really dont have the cash to throw around at the moment.
Any info would be appreciated.
Cheers
Jayden

Re: SJ80 Rear Diff Replacement Options
Have you looked around for a replacement centre yet? You might be suprised and actually find one. As mentioned, i'd be checking out your bearings first though, prolly the cheapest and easiest.HotAe92 wrote:Hey all,

Re: SJ80 Rear Diff Replacement Options
Im pretty sure sj80 rear diffs are the same, just a different crown and pinion. no reason that it couldnt be rebuilt by any diff specialist.HotAe92 wrote:Hey all,

Cheers for that so far fellas.
Its going in for a service in the next fortnight, so ill get my mechanic to check that out for me.
Ive heard a screwed diff before and this sounds very much like it, alot of clunking too, so im convinced its the centre, but ill check out the wheel bearings anyhow.
Cheers again

leafy centres do fit in the rear thou the front is the problem being high pinion
coily ratios are different
looks like your in luck i have a coily rear centre i no longer need

TOYZUKI 96 coily zook,lux diffs, 3 inch suspension lift,3 inch body lift, 33'sMTRS,series 4 hopper,power steer,twin air lockers,4 LINK front and rear,2 inch spacers(GOT WIDTH)
Sweet, hold on to that for the time being if you can.RB zook wrote:looks like your in luck i have a coily rear centre i no longer need
Dad took the car for a drive, he thinks that water may have gotten in from the water crossings i have done lately, and i have been too lazy to drop the oil. Therefore changing the viscosity and hence noise, but he also thinks maybe a bearing.
