Jumping out of Low Range 4WD

Hi all,

I'm having a problem in that my 1997 NL Pajero is jumping out of low range 4WD. I have an Auto transmission and occasionally when climbing steep, rocky terrain the 4WD selector lever will jump back to the "neutral" position between 4Llc and 4Hlc... I know the Auto transfer case doesn't strictly have a neutral position but thats the best way to descibe it.

I've tried searching this forum and some of the other ones as well as consulting my mechanic but can't find any refeence to this so I assume it's a rare problem.

Some suggestions have been... transfer lever fouling the body, worn engine/gearbox mounts or weakened/poor detent springs inside the box.

I've checked the first two, but short of droipping the case out I can't follow up the detent springs.

Does anybody have any suggestions before I plunge into doing that?

Cheers,
Peter.

hmmm OK... but any ideas as to what was causing it to happen? Have you managed to fix it?

nah havnt managed to fix it, i just bought a patrol and it fixed the problem ;)
nah seriously but, i found that if i applied a little bit of pressure to the lever it would hold itself in gear
