ct20 on a 3l
G'Day,
I was wondering if anyone had some useful info on fitting and tuning a CT20 turbo to a 2.8d 4x4 hilux. I have a patrol bonnet scoop so I want to fit a intercooler.
Cheers

Hi there
I'm at the moment doing the same thing. I've been told to fit a pyrometer and a boost guage that way you can see what's happening and tune accordingly. I think optimum temp was between 350-550degrees but i'm sure someone can correct me if i'm wrong. sort of fudging around with it. Don't leave the tuning too long it can cause a bit of damage.

afaik the best turbo is the 2lt-e one. however there has been plenty of comments about them going a lot better and a lot cooler with a highflowed ct20, i suspect the ct20 is a little bit to small.
surf manifold is a straight enough swap.
for proper performace fit a boost compensator or the 2lt injection pump as it has it fitted. wit the intercooler it will rock

93lux,
I got the CT20 off a 2L-te, everything's a pretty straight swap. I forget why now but I had to swap the oil filter bracket from the 2Lte and fit it onto the 3L I think it was part of the turbo mount. Anyway caused me to swap from a $5 Z9 oil filter to a $25 z334. Apart from that it's good as, also had to swap some air tubing because the 3L hoses were too short, but they're easy enough to source from a hose shop. Make sure you tune it hey. No point doing all that stuff without tuning it properly. I thought I'd just wind up the fuel on the pump, but you're better off tuning the pump properly.

Yumsylux,
Thanks for the feed back mate much appreciated. By saying the oil filter bracket do you mean the oil cooler housing itself? In your opinion does the CT20 stop producing power at about 2500rpm like I have read? What do you get from a tank on a long drive? Whats your thoughts on the whole thing? (sorry for the mass of questions just want to rack someones brain that has done this before)
Thanks again

I put ct20 on my 3l not a drama, took me 3hrs and bit of stuff around tuning with no pyro or boost gauge. Mine has no intercooler and i run 35's /4.88 ratio diffs/g52 box and get around 15L/100km.I put it on at 220000km i have had it on for 40000km's and hasn't skipped a beat.
97 Hilux xcab, SAS, 2.8 turbo, hi-steer
and so on
and so on
Well got it tuned properly today. I'm pulling in around 9-9.5L/100Km now. I was getting around 10.5L/100k before the tuneup. Did a long drive to work out some sums. The oil filter mount is also the bracket that holds the turbo housing. I probably didn't need to do that but it was sitting on the 2LTE so just pulled it all off to ensure it all fits properly and everything's right.
I've found it keeps pulling to around 3000rpm. Since the mixture's been thinned out a bit it seems to run out around approx 2800. Makes sense I guess. Ii does feel a bit different but I guess you'd expect that if the first taste of my new motor and turbo was too rich. Still a huge differnce than before thought. I'd recommend getting it done to everyone!

2l and afaik early 2lt ones won't fit. get the later 2lt or 2lt-e one.cathgart wrote:Hi, I have just obtained a 3L to replace the very sad 2L. I wanna put my ct20 on it but what manifold do I use? The one I have wont fit and I can't find one at any wreckers????
Please help???

thats not a bad thing as the z334 filter is a lot better filter.caused me to swap from a $5 Z9 oil filter to a $25 z334
havn't heard of that one. generally the biggest thing is lack of power in the lower gears. don't really get a lot of boost (2lt) untill 3rd gear and 2000 rpm. they spin to the usuall 4000 or so rpm.In your opinion does the CT20 stop producing power at about 2500rpm like I have read?
Ok .. So what did the kit cost you .. or whats it cost to get a ct-20 rebuilt ..
I reckon that mine is weeping oil from the bearing into the intake .. and does not appear to generate much in the way of performance giving boost ..

Well got my hands on a 2LT Mark 2 manifold yesterday and it bolted straight on!! Yippee. Thanks guys. As for the oil feed, the inlet to the turbo will come from the oil sender inlet and am putting a dump pipe into the sump tommorrow. Once its all done I will post a pic for ya's.
Thanks again for the advice,
Matt

Looks good but there is a bracket that comes down off the exhaust manifold and bolts to the oil cooler plate to take some of the load of the manifold itself, without that braket i have seen manifolds crack,if you cant source one from a wreckers there not hard to make. Also another hot tip i worked out while up at fraser is its a good idea to run a water presure gauge,i blew a heater hose on the way to the cape and when there is no water in your engine yout temperature gauge doesnt move,i noticed a funny smell and pulled over to find i had no water,by exhaust temp did not increasen either,i have always run water pressure gauges on my boats and will now do so on the car, that could have been a very expensive mistake.
Never thought of a braket coz I didn't have one on the 2L but yeah makes sense. Think I'll have to knock one up tommorrow.
It will fit under the bonnet coz I do have a 2" cab lift.
Got the motor in this arvo to find that coz my front leafs are sad the sump is gunna bash on the diff.
More bloody money!!!!

Hmmm I have what I think is a 2lt ( or a 2l retro fitted with a 2lt fuel pump as it has a boost compensator on it, but I am still running the Z9 filter)
Next anyone know question .. is there a pre fabbed dump pipe avaliable ? .. and where do I shim the wastegate actuator to increase the boost a couple of pounds ... up to say 10 ...

Ahh the old washer as "shims" My sort of engineeringbastard wrote:no i couldnt find a pre fabbed dump pipe but it wasnt hard to make, and to increase the boost you pack washes behind the bolts on the front of the turbo which moves the bracket forward,i moved mine forward about 3mm and my boost went from 7 to 9.

i know it has been done. but i think its not that good. imho the CT20 is a tad small even on the 2.4, its bareable on the 2.8 but i think its pushing sh*t uphill on the 3 litre. it would be better to use the turbo off the 3 litre turbo motors.gotoy wrote:Anybody ever put the CT20 turbo on a 5L engine?
