33's are pretty good. Anything bigger and it tends to make the car higher and a prick to get stuff out off. And yes I know its probably less than an inch. But I know my shorty was a pain to get stuff out of when the 35's where on.
Also car will accelarate, brake and handle better than on 35's.
Oh and the 33's I had or will use when I get me next car. Will be 285/75R16, they cost abit more than equivilent 33x12.50R15. But I like a slightly narrower tyre with less sidewall. I had both BFG muds and Cooper stt's in that size and was happy with them.
At the moment I am running 255/85R16 (very narrow 33) and am not overly happy with them. I thought they would have been better, but am finding the tyre is abit to narrow for that much sidewall, when it comes to a daily driver/ tourer.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY....
For a tourer remember fuel economy. As Mad Cruiser said, what gearing you running and are you prepared to change it. I have a TD 80 series and went from 12 l/100km on 31s to 17 l/100km with 33's so there is a big consideration there if you do a lot of k's. (I do and it hurts at the pump). However, depending on whether it's petrol, gas of diesel and what power you have will depend on the increase at the pump.
I used to run 35's on the middy and they were a little unhappy on road but made up for it off road (Claws), my 33 STT are manerable on the road and can cope with most dirt and rock you can throw at it and a bit of the mud also.
If you go bigger, be prepared to sacrifice more dollars than just the tyres. But it's worth it.

yeh i definatly wouldnt put 35s on a standard geared truck, the fuel economy would go out the window.

Did you take into account your speedo error when you worked out you MPG? When I went from 33's to 35's my MPG got better.Trusa wrote:For a tourer remember fuel economy. In terms of gearing, I found that the 35's in 4th gear use the exact revs as 31's in 5th gear. This means I'm spending more time in 4th which is supposed to be stronger and only using 5th (possibly the weakest link in my drivetrain) on really flat sections.
It terms of economy I haven't really seen any significant change from 3F on 31's to V8 on 31's to V8 on 35's for highway miles. Its always done about 18L/100km on gas. Round town is a bit different cos the V8 is too much fun!!
I'm guessing that the ability to use the taller 5th gear and very little right foot on the flat highway sections must balance out with the greater rolling resistance.

15 or 16s?
If you want availability of spare tires if you destroy one out in middle of nowhere, stick with standard sizes.
265 or 285's are standard in 16s
31 or 32s are pretty standard, but 33's maybe available in some areas.
Finding a perfect match to your who flung dungs will be impossible.
BFG AT's while not being the latest adn greatest are pretty much available anywhere.
then again they can freight in tires usually in a few days. All depends how remote you go..

i was running a set of 32's on a td42 and it made very little difference to power and economy. Have a set of 34's to play with and they suck a heap more juice and make driving on long trips a bit of a pain.
I suppose tyre size will come down to the type of terrain you are likely to encounter. Most tracks in Vic high country can easily be done with 32-33 inch tyres.

GQ Patrol with a few bits and pieces.
For touring, 33's X 16" rim size with an aggressive A/T tread would be a happy medium for me.
If it was me I'd have 33's which I think is a decent enough size for off road touring and more readily available in the more remote areas if you need one.
I'd go for an aggressive A/T tread pattern too so on road holding isn't too compromised but capable enough on most general off road terrain.
All the other points about sizes and tread have been said.
On the other hand if it was just a play truck I'd go for the biggest the vehicle can handle and most suitable tread for where I'd take it
cheers

GQ patrol - go 31" MTR's or BFG all terrain. Both are well proven, easily accessible and Good all condition tyres providing decent mileage, good fuel consumption. Nissan put this size tyre on the car for a reason, and really the improvement of a 33 over a 31 off road is very minimal, yet braking, acceleration and fuel consumption are hugely sacrificed.
