atf in the t-case????

Post by sw1 »

gu patrol
looked in the book and it states theres supposed to be atf in the t-case

any one know why?

not to sure what to do, i checked whats in there now and it not atf, most likely 80 90 gear oil - color, smell, viscosity.

it does not make any sense at all to me to put atf in there unless theres something i not know about.

any info out there???

i was told by the dealer mechanic if atf comes out put atf back in, if gear oil comes out put gear oil back in. early ones used gear oil and late ones used atf. if its atf make sure u use nissan matic D atf to stop the auto hubs locking up.

That surprises me. I have a 98 GU 4.5 petrol and it definately had gear oil in it, when i got it 2nd hand with 70,000klms on the clock.

When i did reduction gears i put 80-90 weight oil back in.

I recall reading somewhere that it was the chain coupled units that had the atf in them ....

ATF or 75W-90 is OK according to Nissan.
Our '01 GU had 75W-90 in it OE (manual hubs), and that's what replaced it.

Not sure what you mean. All GQ and GU transfer cases are chain coupled units. ie use a chain to drive front driveshaft.

I've spoken to a gearbox rebuilder about this as a lot of smaller front wheel drive vehicles have had atf in their manual transmissions when I've drained them. Yet after refilling them with atf, they tend to crap themselves after a few thousand km's. The transmission rebuilder reckons that the atf is only meant to be running in oil, and when the oil is replaced, it should be replaced with gear oil.

well small update

with the october long weekend just passed i went with a 4wd club along the boarder track in sa.

now before i went i did all my pre trip checks etc. this included greasing the front drive shaft. now as ive only had the car 3 months or so this was the first time its has been done by me. soon as i got on to the freeway and got up to freeway speed i could hear my stupid auto hubs clunking in and out.......

obviously the freshly greased shaft is now alot free'r and was free spinning up at high way speed, then the stupid auto hubs would see this and engauge. they continued to bang in & out until i stopped and tied up the front drive shaft.

clearly the auto hubs have to go, no argument there.

however the thicker gear oil maybe causing the front shaft to free spin up at highway speed.

i think i will try the atf.
