Some questions on 4wd

Just picked up an import Nissan Terrano (today) and I had some quick questions.

I've done some searches but I'm not a off-road 4wd person so don't know anything at all about 4wding or desiel engines, and the searches I have done don't seem to be bringing up an good info for 4wd servicing.

I didn't buy it for off-roading but mainly if I ever needed to tow something like a boat etc.

1) The engine is a 2.7 turbo desiel and I was wondering where is a good place to get it serviced etc at a good price this is for a warranty on the 4wd.

2) anyone know of where I could get the body roll/pitch meters or guages/housing part? I got no idea what they are called, I was hoping to get the proper part for the car as it was there before hand must of been broken or something and removed.

it has had some stuff done to it, like a 8mm or 10mm bash plate for the engine has been added and has some side steps added to it as well, plus the 2 front wheels have free running hubs.

so if anyone can help with he above questions or maybe anything else that I might need to know, I'm going to see about getting the auto box serviced ASAP but as always there could be something else that might need a look at I guess.

3) what sort of stuff would be good as a tool set for the car it doesn't have a jack etc.

4) what are good places to sus out for said tool kit I could only think of maybe an ARB shop or a camping shop. as I said before I know jack all about 4wd's

Don't take offence but if you're not into 4wding and don't intend to take it off road why did you join this forum.

Other then that get a simple jack that will reach your nominated jacking point in your manual, a tyre iron and membership to RACQ for whatever is in your state. Better yet read your manual and it will show you where your jack is hidden. As for a diesel mechanic try www.yellowpages.com.au

Not the sort of replies I was expecting.

Bazooked: not bad but quite a tame video, I wouldn't have bothered driving into that, was quite stupid really.

Even if you did wade through etc it would have been up around chest height.

For some of the crazy stuff you should check out Foxtel with the euro 4wd comp TV shows, they have guys racing into boggy marshes that come half way up the window screen, get bogged and then have another 4wd drive pull the other 4wd through the boggy marsh just to complete a test.

they were sugesting pirate4x4 because those guys flame noobs and made it an artform, search wenzel for an idea of the pirate4x4 PBB power!


how ever some guys on pirate have terrano's so they might have some good info for ya. not many people on here have them they are rare and since they have IFS they are not as desirable as rigs with a solid front axle, but still plenty of people here have IFS rigs.

Book yourself into a basic 4x4 course, if you know nothing about cars then book yourself into a basic mechanics course.

tools to do a basic service, spare belts and hose's.

afaik the terrano came from the factory with freewheeling hubs. search around for what to take 4x4ing and look at some other forums

Dude you should at least find out what your rig is capable of. Look in trips and tracks for some crew up your way that are going on a grade 4 or 5 and tag along. Then you will at least know if you like it or not and whether to keep the 4by or get a ute, because a ute is a much better towing option as you are not carrying around an extra diff and half a gearbox(transfer case). Please go on a run and educate yourself.

Another good thing you should do is try and hook up with a club in your local area and go on a proper 4wd trip with them.


You'll learn a lot about your car and how to drive it and use it offroad.

You can probably hook up with them at a monthly club meeting instead of committing yourself to an offroad trip and then being unprepared.

Things like having your own snatch strap and recovery points before you go 4wding is a good idea.

guys....your ment to encourage these guys toi go 4wd'ing, not tell em to @#$ off!

zagan... ARB is proberly bit on the exspencive side for what you want. a good auto shop should have some decent jacks and wheel nut spanners etc. pays to get a multi socket whell nut brace (i like the cross type) so it fits any trailers you may be towing.

as far as guages....wreakers would be the best bet.

get the auto serviced, they can be an exspencive weak link in those.

lastly.....go for a blast around a farm, light bush aera. get used to the 4x4. even a 4x4 driving school is $$ well spent. (i've found people who don't even know how to get their 4x4 into 4wd before today!)

I've been looking in the manual and I don't think the jack came with the car, it's an import and would have been though someone else before me, but I'll check out the places and see what the go is at least.

Otherwise I might simply buy something from fourbies anyway.

Speak to Ryan at Fourbys, he is a member of this forum (Ryano).
He can give you some good advise and sell you the gear you need.

If you do want to go for a wheel, head down to Ormeau there are some tracks down there and there are usually heaps of people; so you can always get pulled out

The inclometer and clinometer (gauge you want) would best be sourced from a wrecker

Hmm my suggestion , is ask around, some of the members on here arent that mad 4wdin and will do quiet soft trips, once in a while you location says qld, I know that the local guys in mackay , have a trips that you could do in a commodore,


I wouldnt worry too much about comments By some members, who be a bit flame happy. They do seem in the minority when it comes to the 4wding public.

As said , a good bottle jack from most shops will get you by, but the RACQ membership is worth weight in gold, flat tyre, then can call em , leave lights on , callem,
