G52 GearBox Replacement Options (Engine Swap Done)
I am searching as I write this, so all help is good help.
The 1GGTE Engine is running nicely now in the lux, but the very tired and worn G52 5Speed is making some unhappy noises in 1st, 2nd and 3rd gear now.
So what are my options using a benefit cost style analysis?
Rebuild the G52?
Swap for a Reco?
Put in an Automatic?
Another GearBox?
Now the magic phrase of 'direct swap' does anything other than the G52 bolt in?
Cheers

Gday
Saw on ebay a while ago a 2wd gearbox from behind a 1ggte motor ex jap cressida and it was an r series box, so std, the 1ggte come with an r box and a M series motor bellhousing(the 1ggte is an m series motor) This config also came out behind the turbo 7mgte supra. I also know the v6 runner and surfs have the r box, but only from people speaking about it on here....so a mix match of surf box/transfer and supra bellhousing will get you bolted up.
The 1ggte needs to rev to make power, so choose a box with good numbers on first.... the r150 and r154 have different ratios.

ok, you have a bell to adapt to a g box...cheapest option would be bearings, but how much of the work can you do yourself...and would you prefer to be working on boxes or driving the ring out of it....if the later, you will need to get an r box, or a w box....the w will fit straight in as the lux diesels had them....and they are stronger than a g box, but for no more worries about blowing one up sort of option....you need a r box, and i know they come std behind the 1ggte, aswell as 4 runner v6 and 1hz 100 series and surf....so get yourself a supra bell, an r box with transfer from a runner/surf and see how things fit....check out the archives, as this subject has been hammered over the last few years...from memory you can run adapters r to hilux gear transfers too.
Your original question......answer depends on what you want out of the truck....climbing rocks, i wouldnt go past an auto...speak to surfection,(Jeremy) as he has a buggy with a 1ggte/5 speed....and is thinking auto....

This is basicaly what a G52 is. The Supra box is no stronger unless you use a Turbo Supra box which is the same strength as an R series box.crunch wrote:Supra 5 speed? You'll never kill it and shouldn't have any probs getting a bell housing...
Your going to brake any Toyota box unless you go with the Dyna box but its going to cost $$$
Can you tell me why a W box is stronger than an G box.dow50r wrote:ok, you have a bell to adapt to a g box...cheapest option would be bearings, but how much of the work can you do yourself...and would you prefer to be working on boxes or driving the ring out of it....if the later, you will need to get an r box, or a w box....the w will fit straight in as the lux diesels had them....and they are stronger than a g box, but for no more worries about blowing one up sort of option....you need a r box, and i know they come std behind the 1ggte, aswell as 4 runner v6 and 1hz 100 series and surf....so get yourself a supra bell, an r box with transfer from a runner/surf and see how things fit....check out the archives, as this subject has been hammered over the last few years...from memory you can run adapters r to hilux gear transfers too.

Other than cost, is there any issue with the Dyna Box?

The Dyna box has very tough internals and a pretty low first gear .. That low 1st should suit the torque curve of the 1g nicley..ToNkA wrote:Other than cost, is there any issue with the Dyna Box?

I had a feeling I might get that response... I know the G52 is used in the older soarers, wasn't too sure if it was in the supras or not. I was referring to the turbo one too.RUFF wrote:This is basicaly what a G52 is. Time to clear this up. 1G series motors came with a W5* series g/box. They never came with a R series box. R series came behind M series motors, JZ series motors and in various 4wd guises. The G52 is the same strength as ANY W series box. The "turbo supra" box most people talk about is the W58, as it came behing a 1GGTE equiped GA70 supra. The R154 is the "other" turbo surpa box. Any R series g/box will require a custom bellhousing to mate the 1G to it. OK, so now for the differences between the W series box's:-
W55 (1GGE)- alloy sandwich plate, forward shifter position, 0.87 5th gear
W56 - 2wd hilux, shortarse gear ratios!
W57 (early 1Gt's) - as above, but with taller 0.85 5th gear
W58 (1GGTE) - steel sandwich plate, rear shifter position, 0.81 5th gear
The above ratios are going off a beer affected memory .
In short, rebuild the G52, properly, and it will last a looong time. Hell, you can even swap and change ratios from the W boxes!
Oh, and the 1GGTE is NOT an M series motor, it is a G series motor. The only other Toyota sereis of motors that has the same bellhousing to motor bolt pattern is the T series (2T, 2TG, 3TGTE, etc)
Put a R154 and W58 next to each other and the R154 farking dwarfs the W58. And it will not bolt onto a G series motor.

i have also looked into this as i think the G52 won't hold up to my 7MGTE, two options i see are the r series from V6 runner with an adapter to use the gear t-case, or the A340 auto with an adapter and shift box.
Will the dyna box bolt onto a g52 bellhousing, or does marks make there own bellhousings to suit different motors?
