Snorkel Air Leak

I know this has been asked a few times before but I cant find the thread.

I have just had a snorkel fitted to my 98 Hilux diesel and want to check how well it has been fitted.

When I cover the ram the engine revs a bit but doesnt stall. Should it do so? I can hear a little air leak where the pipe enters the air filter and the suction on the snokel is quite strong.

go along the joins of the snorkel with aero start or carby cleaner and spray small amounts at the joins and see if the eng revs pick up at all

if it does see the fitter who fitted it or seal it up your self if the eng has sensors on it use sensor safe silicone too

The motor shouldnt stall if you covered the Ram, take the ram off the snorkel body, cover the top with your hand, then see what it does, if it still doesnt stall the first thing i would check would be the breather pipe that goes from the Tappet cover back to the intake (ull know what i mean) Toyota only has dodgy hose clamps on that breather hose, so put new ones on and then try and stall it again. if it doesnt stall pull the aircleaner element out and see if they sealed the drain holes in the bottom of the air box. If it still doesnt stall and you think the snorkel plumbing is leaking take, it back to who ever fitted it.

I spoke to one of the fellas at Fourbys (they didnt fit it) and he said firstly that you shouldnt put your hand over the snorkel because the compression/suction is so great for diesels it could suck my hand down the snorkel...lucky it has a leak then aye?

He also said that covering it up most probably wouldnt stall a diesel no matter how good the seal is.

I took it in to the guys that fitted it and had a chat and it seems that the leak is in the pipe that runs from the air cleaner box into the wheel hub (original air intake which is not looked at when installing snorkel). One pipe goes inside the other to make the connection and a rubber seal on the outside seals it up. Problem is that these pipes move around with the torque of the engine eg. when started/reved. So a simple slastic would prop just tear.

I should be able to by a large hose clamp and some rubber and clamp over the join in the pipe to seal it completely.

I put my hand over the end of my "pvc special snorkel" and it just sucked the pipe in and broke all the joins. Then i had to go around and reseal em all again.

Not advisable. Maybe diconnect from the engine and block the end then add compressed air to find any leaks. I reckon yad only need about 10 pd or so and a bucket of soapy water

I was a full time fitter for ARB, many times the boys will test the snorkels and if the car doesnt stall and they can hear an air leak, they are usually not happy with letting the car leave until the make sure its fully sealed. I can now get my 4.0L Turbo Diesel LandCruiser to stall by putting my hand over it (havnt lost my hand yet ). At first the revs would pick up and ide hear an air leak, now the engine makes no noise and just dies. The only thing that plays on my mind when i do this is how good is it for the motor? ive only done it a few times cause i figured ide do less damage stalling it then if it happened to have a drink going through a creek.

vSAHARAx I cant see how not burning oil can hurt your engine.
It is one of the reasons diesels last so long they use a lubricant for fuel and dont rev high.
