LSD

Post by Sam Walker »

Hi All, Is there any way a factory LSD can be identified from the outside ? On a car at the wreckers (ie not driveable) ? Its a 60 series GLX or GX or GXL (unsure). Has Hi roof (Fibreglass ?) and big aircon in the back.

there should be a sticker on the housing saying "LSD OIL ONLY", its and organe sticker, it might be visible if the writing has worn off, or just try jacking 1 wheel of the ground and seeing if it will turn, if it turns easily - no LSD, if its stiff/wont turn then fair chance it has an LSD
Cheers,
Dan.

build plate codes.
not 100% sure what code you will need to look for but toyota has a system,i cant remember which wya round it is ,so maybe some one else can correct me but i think that if the trans/axle code ends in an odd number then it is LSD and if it is an even number then it is open.
the numbers before refer to the ratio etc.
do a google search on toyota build codes,i seem to remember there being a web site which 'decoded' the build plates so to speak...
cheers

I asked a simlar question the other week and I dont think the 60 came out with a lsd the 40s came out with a torsion diff. but on a 60 you can weld it and when you are on the tar take the longside axle out and put a shortside in you are basically a one wheel drive and when you run the locked diff a 3 wheel drive

I'm not keen on swapping axles for extra traction ! I just thought since it was a deluxe version there might be a chance of it having LSD...thanks for your replies gents

It is easy see those 6 bolts on your rear hub thats all you have to is undo them slide axle out put other in. It ain't a air locker but has the same traction.
