today i had pulled the drums off to adjust the brakes and i noticed alot of grease coming from the inner side of the hub. so i pulled the axle out to find this dirty coloured grease. It smells really bad and is a olive brown colour. could this just be water in there or would it be oil? what seal should i renew to stop whatever is getting in my grease, into my grease?
after the grease i notice the first nut on the stub just sitting there loose. so i undo that with my fingers and am met with the next nut with only 1 out of the 3 locking screws in there. take the screw out the nut comes off and i get the hub off.
the bearings look fine and there is no bits metal anywhere in the whole assembly. the stub is in good nick with no marks on it aswell.
so just wondering why my grease has gone that colour and what seal should i renew to keep it nice.
Sounds like water got in there somewhere do you have extended diff breathers? you can buy a gasket set for the diffs, just replace all the gaskets new grease and diff oil. should be ok it is a forty after all : )
no extended diff breathers :( the breather is on the drives side where the brake line joins the soft part yeh? regreased bearings on one side and i'll finish tomorrow. it was missing a bit of stuff in there and the bearin nuts were set up wrong. i don't think it even had an oil seal on the axle :O

It aint water water and oil go milky that smell is diff oil and I rekon replace you inner axle seal.
the other seal of where your axle joins to the hub you can use Blue gasket silicone or another silicone that blue stuff operates between 0-200C and some other silicones operate between 0-180C I dont see much diffeence exept for price
If you dont have panel damage you ain't trying hard enough
use some thread locking solution on the nuts too cause they are notoious for coming loose and allowing the hub to oscillate, ruining the seals, allowing dirt and water in and eventually f'ing the bearings.
