Best all-terrain tyre?

Post by Snarba »

Hi there just after opinions on A/T tyres for my MK SWB daily dribbler....BFG's seem fairly likely at this stage but I'm sure there must be others at competetive prices :) 33/10.5/15

It's an old line, but there is no "best" of anything, only what suits your needs and your price range...

More info of the sort of driving (on road/off road %), and terrain type you drive would be useful (mud, dirt, rocks, beach). Money no object???

Supposed "A/T's" come in mild to wild tread patterns these days depending on the manufacturer.

^^^^ What he said.

BFG A/Ts were the duck's guts for a long time, but I think the market has overtaken them now (according to some reports, BFG went backwards...)

The A/T market is much harder to define than it once was - some A/Ts are barely more aggressive than H/T tyres, while other "A/Ts" are much closer to (but still not) mud tyres.

How aggressive do you want to go? What sort of offroading do you want to do? The size you're after may limit your options, too.

BFG had a shift in the heirachy or something and changed a lot of stuff in the way they manufacture their tyres. The old ones are the KO series, the new are the KM series. The oledr ones are definately better. If you can get some of the KO series (There are still a few sitting around in storage) then get them, otherwise I'd look at something else.

Having said that, I've got KM series Muds and apart from a chunk I took out of the sidewall, I'm happy with them....

Check 4WD Monthly's comparisons for specific details on what brand is better at what. (Issue 86 was the last one, IIRC. And I think Pirelli Scorpians came out best)

as a road tyre, I'm a fan of the bridgestone A/T - We have them on our Jackeroos and we get 80,000 k's out of em. And thats not treating them nicely

My new Navara came stock on Brisdgetsone Dueler AT's, they were treated nicely and I just had them taken off and binned at 40k, cos they were gone. New BFG At's on now and loving them, My old man got 65k out of his last set on a GU before he traded and they were still going strong...

I find BFG A/Ts excellent for highway work and also very good for dry weather 4X4. I have tackled some fairly steep country in them with minimal slippage.

That siad I have not tried other brands.

4WD Monthly rated the Pirelli Scorpians the best all round AT tyre, and that was after some fairly extensive testing.

For an old school a/t with actuall a/t capabilities things like yokohama super diggers and bridgestone desert duellers arent bad.

Cooper st-c are getting more towards a muddy tread, where things like grandtreks are more towards the car end.

Many manufacturers offer a "more offroad a/t" option and a "more onroad a/t" - usually directional.

Check it what you really need it for an how often.

most a/t's may as well be ht's in mud, so I feel a/t is a misnomer in many cases.

Yes. So what else do we call them? Dry Terrain comes to mind, but I can't tell people I have D/Ts.

Probably not what you want to hear but I reckon Goodyear MTRs.
They are at the tamer end of the mud terains and handle road use beautifully as well as almost anything offroad.
Only thing is they get a bit noisy as they wear (but its a nice noise :) )
I had 2 sets of BFG all terains before and they were OK but MTRs are better in every respect IMO.

thanx everyone...I live in the bush so I drive over a fair bit of dirt roads but mostly bitumen, plus offroad with the trailer getting fire wood and stuff. I'd like some Xterrains but they aint cheap and they won't last as long as others so....

Xterrains also have sweet FA lateral grip. Travelling on gravel roads as much as you do (so i gather), I'd prob steer clear of them. You will probably miss the roo when you swerve, but you'll prob just keep going the way you swerved (Hello tree!)

IMO.

I would get nankang A/Ts at 100 bucks a corner you cant go wrong they is pretty agressive and made of a softer rubber so good offroad and on the only draw back is they wear a bit quicker but the price equals that out

Not many companies make a tyre in the size u want ie: 33/10.5/15. BFG used to be the only one, but the tyre scene is changing

33x10.5 is made by a few companies - Kelly, Cooper, BFG etc. But more that sort of profile is gonna need a 16" rim.

17" and 18" rims are now what 16" was a couple of years ago. 16"s have been the norm for most 4wd's for a decade now...

On the LWB tourer i've had many sets of bridgestone desert duelers. 6 ply and pretty damn tough, especially on dirty rocky roads.

Not that many manufacturers make that size, 12.5 wide yes but 10.5, no.
Just do a google search or whatever on all the 4x4 tyre manufacturers and see how many make that size 1st.

give the xterrains a go I have a set of 35 with about 60000 km and they still have about 12mm left. They have done a lot of trips to the high country and yet to slip of a hill. they steer and stop better than a muddey and came 1 and 2 in the OBC so I they can't be all that bad.
