racing seat instalation

Are there any particular laws applicable to using bucket/racing style seats in a normal passenger vehicle/4wd.

Apart from ensuring the harnessing/seat belts and all the safety issues are covered is there any reason (roadworthiness/safety cert/illegal mod) that means I can't use them?

Apart from the usual safety items you listed, for it to be legal they have to be (a) ADR approved seats and (b) you must obtain a mod plate for them from an engineer.

So, how do I find out if they're ADR approved?

I'm looking at buying a hilux with them in. I'm in Qld and it's in NSW.

It recently passed "roadworthy" for NSW rego does this mean it's been certified by an engineer and will it pass "safety certification" in Qld.

Any help boys?

I've read the Qld Transport guidelines but am still not sure if a vehicle deemed 'roadworthy' in NSW is OK in Qld (as far as the seating is concerned).

racing seats suck with normal seatbelts. its just messy and the belt doesn't touch you

They have racing style four point harnesses that are attached at the rear of the back passenger section of the cabin (dual cab)...

I'd be calling qld transport to get an answer to your question. At the end of the day its their oppinion that counts, not ours. I really dont know the answer to your question, but I'd assume if you have a mod plate it should be legal. If it doesnt have one then you will need to get one regardless of whether someone passed it for roadworthyness in NSW or not.

hey I have a car that came from NSW and has a race seat in it. It passed a RWC fine. I cannot say if it is different in any way to what you are looking at, but it has recently gone for a saftey certificate and it passed fine.

we have racing seats in a zook with harnesses we also had to leave the std retractable seatbelts in.
to get a RWC you need a mod plate

Troll, sorry did you say you got an engineer to approve those seats and brackets? Are the bolts that secure those seats going all the way through the floor with crush tubes fitted to stop the box section collapsing? The pic may be decieving but that looks flimsy as.

no it doesnt go all the way through to the floor, the wall on the box section is 4mm. alot thicker than the stock seat mounts.

It looks like it would pass with flying colours.

The seat mounts on my HJ60 bolt to metal risers welded to the floorpan (similar to what the RHS in the zook is doing) which are at most 1mm thick. That RHS is guaranteed to be much stronger than that.

As long as the bolts are grade 8.8's, and the welds look good with no holes blown through the floorpan, I'm sure an engineer would pass it.

It might be cheaper just to borrow some standard seats and belts till you get it rego'ed. Than put them back in.
I had racing seat and harness in an RX4 and the Cops never had an issue with the seat. Got pulled over once because they could see the old reel seat belt was not being used, but once they saw the racing harness they were fine with it. They did suggest removing the old belt.

Yeah I agree completely, it would be heaps strong. It didnt look like 4mm in the pic but they can be deceiving. The engineer that approved my seat brackets in the 40 was very adamant about using crush tubes in the box section but that was because I was bolting all the way through the box, not bolting to 1 face as has been done in the zook (thats why I asked that question). I cant recommend anyone in the gold coast but wasnt there a list of engineers on this site somewhere. Might be worth doing a search for it.
