petrol intercooler on diesel

Flow has a lot to do with it. What's Silvia - 2 litre? How big's your diesel?
If the intake air flow doesn't suit your engine you'll have a large pressure drop. This means your turbo needs to compress to a higher pressure to achieve the same intake manifold pressure, which means the air from the turbo is hotter. If the intercooler is too small to remove this extra temperature you may be worse off than without it.
Well, that's my understanding, after another OL member attempted to educate me.
The cooler dimensions don't sound particularly large.

id be getting somthing bigger than that to make a real difference, you can get a 60x30x10 for less then 200 bucks new off ebay or try http://www.calaisturbo.com.au/ you see heaps of 2nd hand ones on here
This could cause a bit of lag though... on a diesel you can't really afford to have lag due to the low rev range and usually wanting power to come on relatively early. Could also cause a bit of pressure drop, and make your turbo work harder to produce the same pressure at the inlet manifold.
My stock intercooler is only about 30cm square I think.. and it does its job very well.
