Engineering Mod Plate - Code For Suspension Lift???

Post by oscar »

All,

I have a friend of a friend who can do Mod Plates. He doesn't see many 4WD's so isn't up to speed on the mod codes for mods done on 4WD's.

Can someone who has a QLD (do they change state by state?) mod'ed 4WD, please have a look and tell me the code for the suspension lift.

The need for a mod plate has been driven by the local constabulary...

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks.
Cheers,

Oscar

If your friends friend can do mod plates i'm sure he will have the code of practice.
All the info needed will be in that.

I think he'll find there is no code for suspension lifts!

Well, that's exactly what he found, but thought that couldn't be correct.

Hence the question here.

It's not actually for my car. Touch wood, i haven't been pulled over yet. It's for the friend who has the friend...if that makes sense.

He's got a GQ with 7" suspension lift, and 35's. He got pulled over the other day and they asked him to provide the "papers", not a specific request for a mod plate.

Can anyone shed any light.
Cheers,

Oscar

you cant get papers for a lift over 6 inchs. and if its under 6' you dont need any.

6' is the limit for total lift.
total includes tyres, spring and body lift combined.

so this friend of the friend is going to have to put in standard/ish springs and go back to get it rechecked as all good.
then back home to chuck the old gear back in.

in qld you can only modify suspension according to the modification guidlines supplied by qld transport. No mod plate is required for these modifications.

No engineer can approve a suspension modification in QLD because they cant. THey can only approve suspension redesigns, ie, going from leaf to coil etc etc.

Now, your mate has a 6" lift, hes permitted a maximum lift of 2" in QLD. Nothing you can do about that. He has to drop it to a 2" lift.

Qld road rules suck.

I had a 5" lift in my 80 when it was rego'd in NSW, fully engineered. Try to get in rego'd in Qld and suddenly it's illegal and unroadworthy and "dangerous death trap" :bad-words:

Even thou the lift had a engineers cert. it was still illegal. I had to drop it back to 2" and drop my tyers back to 32's before I could get it rego'd.
I also had to pay for a blue mod plate too :bad-words: :bad-words:

2" is a rule of thumb, it's actually a percentage of travel.. and if you have progressive bumpstops they're rang of motion isn't included.

NOT TRAVEL... 1/3 of the actual measurement between bumpstop and stopping plate. and the mode of limiting cant change. I.E. you cant go 7 inchs and limit the travel with extended bumpstops

The paper's would be an written approval by DOT.

Thanks guys.

The 1/3 of bump stop clearance is the rule i was aware of.

So the only way he's going to get "papers" is to get a DOT inspection with his suspension modifed as stated above hey...

I guess they might also like him to put his sway bars back in too... :D

My GU has 4" lift, i got it RWC'd after the lift. The guy doing the inspection pinged me and quoted the modification as looking like it exceeded the 1/3 and was going to fail me, then i asked him what my original bump stop clearance was, and that he should get under it and measure it now.

All i got was a blank stare and he signed the certificate. :finger:

Thanks alot for the info guys.
Cheers,

Oscar

2" used to be specified in the modification leaflet distrubuted by QLD transport. I have an old copy on my desk which says this.

I see looking at the current booklet that 2" lift has been dropped and now it only says 1/3 rebound.

Interesting, what is the OEM rebound of a patrol?

It is not up to the approved person issuing the safety certifictate to know the specs of your vehicle. It is up to you to prove to him that your modification complies.

If he suspects it doesn't comply he could have simply failed the safety certificate pending you supplying him information proving your modification was legal.

I know.

The one of the main guys in this town that does RWC is a Pedders distrbuter. He appeared to have a bit of an attitude because i had another brand on the car.

The GQ in his parking bay that sits quite high is testament to that fact that he was testing me.

It's a small town. He couldn't get away with that sort of hipocracy without it comming back to bite him. He's known for doing such things to people who have components on their cars that weren't sourced from him, if he sells a similar product.
Cheers,

Not trying to hijack link and it is probably a stupid question but here goes.

I have a NSW registered Cruiser with 6 inch lift (engineered) and am coming up north in a couple of months for a fishing trip.

My question is can the boys in blue nail me for this while I'm up there.

Cheers Phil.

Your vehicle is registered in NSW(?) and thus must comply with the conditions of NSW registration. If they suspect your vehicle does not comply with the requirements of NSW registration they can defect you. They cant defect you based on the requirements of QLD registration.
