1988 Pathfinder. Is this good value?

Post by drifter »

Hey guys.
I'm searching for a 4by, but haven't decided what to get yet. I'm really just doing some research at the moment.

I've found a really nice looking 1988 Nissan Pathfinder 2.4 litre petrol on eBay. I messaged the seller with some questions & he replied the following.
"The fuel tank is about 55 litres. Around town its about 11 litres/100ks. On the highway about 600k's to a tank."
Does that sound about right to you?

The car is being offered for $4500 buy it now. Does that seem like a good price?

Am I allowed to post the ebay link to this car on the forum for you to have a look?

Yes, you can post a link here.

$4500 is not outstandingly cheap for a pathy of that vintage... when I was looking a couple of years ago most were about $5-6k and big 4wd's have dropped a lot in price since then.

You may find that you can get one much cheaper than that from a dealer.. I know I can with a very quick search

As such I'd find it hard to buy for $4500 off ebay of all places when you can buy one form a dealer with a years rego, rwc and warranty for less.

For a victorian looking for a pathy this one looks good due to the commodore v6 conversion.

Thanks for your thoughts. I was just curious because of all the stuff done to it.

Well, considering that most of it is maintainance work that sounds like it's either higher kms than stated or it's copped a lot of abuse during its life.

The only things that are any real improvement is a 2" lift kit (how old and shagged is the lift kit) and the the bullbar.

31" a/t's are pretty much standard fare and you'd buy a secondhand set for $200 here on any given week. Plus you probably want muddies anyway.

The roof lights are illegal and pure w@nk factor.... Jerry can carriers can only be used for water (illegal to carry fuel in them) and are worth $30...

I mean all in all it's not that bad, but it's probably not worth $4500 and its definately not a better buy than the V6 commodore fitted one.

Plus, he will only pay for 3 months rego if you actually pay him what he wants - it's currently being sold unreg and unrwoadworthy... which makes it a $3000 car at best.

Unregistered unroadworthy cars are worth thousands of dollars less than a regoed and roadworthy one.

Having had both a 1988 Navara King Cab and 1988 Pathfinder with the Z24 engine I have some comments.

The fuel tank is 80L not 55 L as stated. Expect to get around 15L when driving around town (430km) on HWY about 550km 13.5L/100km.

WIth 31" tryes you will need to crank up the front torsion bars. There was a good how to on the web if I feel like finding it.

There is a hidden engine hose under the air intake manifold. This is ofter neglected. Feel down there with you hand to find. I have blown a few of these :D

The air vent surrounds in teh dash warp and you will have o chance in finding them, look for rust around the rear side windows. Also if it has a rear wheel carrier these can rattle, check the little wedge where it slides up on. Also look for rust on the body mounts of the wheel holder.
