Wheel bearings.

I took out the front bearings on the car, cleaned them ( visually they looked fine), greased them and stuck them back in. Passenger side was fine, but the drivers side still has a little movement in it, but it requires quite a bit of force to rock it. Do I presume it is the bearing, though it looked fine, or could it be something else? Someone said it could be the Kingpin bearings, but I must confess, I do not even know what there job is.

The guy over the road did mine when mine shat them selves along with the free wheeling hub(no wonder it didn't get up the hill!).

He teaches mechanics at a tafe or what ever and said there is ment to be a bit of movement but not heaps so i wouldn't worry about it!

Check the backing plate is not loose.

check the big bearing nut thats holds them in place

mine were a little sloppy and i just got there and tightened those nuts and regreased everything ands its swweeeet now

i recently had do replace me bearings, my bottom kinpin was gone. when i pushed on the top of the tyre there was heeps of movement

Thanks for all the help guys. I swapped the bearings from one side to the other and hey presto, now the passenger side is bad. I did find when I took them out, the drivers side nut could be undone by hand, so i guess it just worn out quickly. For future reference, how hard are the kingpin bearings to relace? Is it as simple as undo the two cover bolts and pulling them out? And then just putting new ones in?

ya have to pull the whole knuckle of to change the king pin bearings.
