opinions on this GQ

Post by TimMQ »

Im considering buying a GQ from a dealership. Having never delt with dealerships before, not sure what im in for, dont want to get ripped off.

for some reason i cant post the link to it so heres a basic rundown of the car.

1995 GQ ST LWB

Green over champaigne
168,411kms
5sp
Deisel
Snorkel
Hot water camp shower
air con
towbar, bullbar
alloys
pwr steer, windows, mirrors
service books
standard no mods

They want $13,990 for it

I spoke to the mob at the sale yard and it is in apparently immaculate condition no rust etc. They also gave me a bit of history about the vehicle and the previous owner

Is $13,990 a little steep for a GQ? even with such low kms, assuming theyre genuine. If so what sort of price should i be bargaining for?

one last Q, would it be wise to have it looked over by a mechanic?

cheers

Tim

Thats pretty low km's for what sounds like a tourer.

Does the odometer work when you drive it? Some people disconnect it while they own it to "keep the mileage down" :x

Definetly get a vehicle check on it for your own peace of mind, you might be surprised, it might be a genuine pearler!
Might cost you a bit to get the engine properly tested though.

That price sounds about normal from a dealer for a 95 ST, very good if all the other is genuine.

cheers

Havnt had a chance to drive it yet, its a few hours north. I am a bit sus on the kms also, guess ill have to wait and see.

Whats involved in testing a deisel? compression tests etc?.

Apparently there has been a bit of interest in it and they wont take a deposit as im going for a trade in. I dont like the idea of rushing the sale.

Im getting a thick head trying to work out how im going to look at it, get it tested etc all in a day so i dont have to do the trip up and back twice.

I reckon the price is pretty good for a late model GQ Diesel with low KLMS.

It IS a 4.2 diesel isnt it? not a 2.8?

All vehicles in Canberra are also overpriced.
Can save way more than the cost of travel and rego transfer by going up to Sydney to buy. But of course, Sydney being more coastal than Canberra can also mean rust etc being more likely.

Where you are makes a huge difference to price.

If you're in the NRMA their website allows you to do a price check on the value of a car.

I'm about to run out myself, but when I'm back later I'll run through the NRMA site and do a check for you if you're not in NRMA.

Well, stuff that, even as a member NRMA want $11 for a valuation on a vehicle.
Sorry, can't help you with it.

They would be asking 15 to 18k in FNQ for that Nissan, if it is as you say.

Go for it if it checks out,

cheers fnq

just remember it could be a tourer with genuine low km's or it coulda had a lift kit etc which has been removed, so it may have been used as a serious offroader aswell. but if the body is in immaculate condition then this might not be the case. just remember, you've got as much chance of buying a 2nd hand lemon as a brand new one. ;)

Is it turbo diesel? If not, you're up for a fair bit to put one on. And you'll get sick of how slow it is if it's not.

Still don't know where it is. Sydney has plenty around this price so as Barnsey said, it's hard to tell if it's a fair deal or not.

Telling you there are other buyers looking at it is the oldest trick in the car seller's book. Don't rush in or look too keen. If someone else is willing to pay top dollar for something, let it go and keep looking for a better deal.

If the Km's are real, it'll be a good buy.
Something that will last a long time and no restrictions on what you could do with it.
Good luck.

Thanks for all your replies.

Rang just before going to look at it to confirm a few details. Turns out it was a 2.8. Least i found out before i got there. what a joke. I suggested they change the details of their ad.

Why are these 2.8s going for so much when the general opinion seems to be theyre shite?

Thanks again

btw im in NSW car was in QLD

Mine has factory diff lock, snorkel, ST model, dual batteries, turbo, winch, lift, 35's, other extra's etc but the car yard advertised none of this, just that it was a 4.2D wagon in very good cond.
That wouldn't create much interest for someone looking for a neat Patrol with extras.

It was only because my mate spotted in the yard and took it for a spin that I got the full details :D

Wonder if it was the fact that it was a HOLDEN dealer and they had lots of HOLDEN commercials and 4wd's they would rather have the attention on
