GQ TOURER...INFO PLEASE
GQ TOURER...INFO PLEASE
Okay so me and the mrs have decided we wanna travel this great country of our and we need a vehicle to do it in.
We will be towing 2 tonnes of wind dragging Milliard Caravan.
What we need is a car than can get this puppy moving and keep the kms up when we hit hills. I dont wanna slow down to 60kms an hour on hills and have to constantly change gears.
we were thinking of an early 90's GQ with the td42 motor and putting on a MTQ turbo and intercooler with freeflowing exhaust etc etc.
Plain and simple will it do the job?? Or would i be better off putting in a 6.5 chev diesel?? Although fuel economy is a concern its not a major one.
Is it possible to get an auto??
I also plan to run it 3"'s higher than standard and with 33's and a roofrack.
Any info, opinions or ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Looking for a car
if set up properly a gq should do all of this.
for me id prefer a tourer with an original motor. just for ease of parts maintenace and repairs onthe road.
and a good intercooled turbo setup eg the denco kits should do this nicely
you will wanna run a bit of boost and a 3 inch exhaust too tho
my gq runs 35's and a 6 inch lift and tows the old mans 1500kg boat easily at 100-110. only real issue is 6 inch lift isnt realy the best for load
a good 3 inch setup with polyairs or similar should handle sweet tho

Sandy Bowman from Aus4wd was mean to do the same as you some touring he choose a 2.8 GU, and fitted a worked 4.2 turbo diesel, the pump was done, the snorkle was done, roller bearing turbo the works. So there is no need for a 6.5 chev V8 diesel the 4.2 produce enough power when done correctly.
And the truck pulled the carvan no problem however due to work and personnel commitments the trip didnt eventuate and the GU was sold.
If i was you find your self a 10-15k GU petrol manual so you have the small rear diff, then purchase a 4.2 turbo diesel late model and get that fitted they are generally under 10k complete. I would then fit decent suspension either OME LTR's or dual shock the front with some Koni's.
If done correctly and your patient you could achieve this for under 30k.
For all your HID and LED stuff

What you're suggesting will be fine.
A turbo will help greatly with the towing, and if set up properly there should be no issues.
If doing a lot of outback, keep it simple.
Keep the lift small, 2-3"s will be ample. Maybe some polly airs in the back.
Can't see the need for dual shocks... if doing a lot of corrugations, take your time and let the shocks cool down every now and then.
Use a tyre size that will be readily available in the outblocks.

So are you guys suggesting i dont turbo???

Towing is great, because you get to leave the house and all the weight behing when you wanto!
you need a GQ( pre 97 model) td42 with aftermarket turbo and 3" exhaust.
this will do the job for you.
if you realy want testicles, you need one with a 6.2/6.5 turbo chev diesel.
but the turbo 4.2 should do the trick.
