occasional starting problem 12HT

Post by TimMQ »

picked up a 90 model 61 turbo yesterday and its great.
Have been having a few small problems though that i want to iron out.

Most of the time it starts great, first kick. other times the battery wont have the guts to turn it over.

What has me confused though is i can leave the car overnight and it will fire fine in the morning. Then i can drive it for half and hour, turn it off, come back in 2 minutes and it will play games. Lucky its manual

im hoping its battery related and not alternater?

cheers
Tim

Do you have a multimeter? Test the battery. Sitting still (off) should be 12.6V. Under load (running) should be about 14.4V. I hope that's right.

Don't crucify me over those quoted figures either!

I'd be looking for a loose connection at the battery or the starter motor/ starter relay.
If you want a spare 60 for bits-

London to a brick you've got worn starter motor contacts...

Easy (and cheap) fix too.

(After you've done the easy stuff), Pull your starter motor out and replace these.

Cheers

had the same problem with a 86 60 would spin like a top in the morning but next time you go to start it it would barely turn over, replaced the two contacts in the starter same prob cleaned all contacts, batt , starter, earths same thing , replaced primary starting battery job done. i did put a multi meter across the batt no load volts good full load volts good apparently the plates in the batt had sulphided and couldnt store voltage but would come good overnight. multi meter readings only gave me an indication that the alternator, regulator were doing their thing

my mate had the same drama, and he did the same as chuckles above posted, get your starter looked at and it should be the end of your dramas,
