Oil Flush

Post by joel HJ60 »

Looking at changing the oil in my diffs, gbox and tranny case soon and, as I don't know how long since they've been change or what oil is currently in them I wanted to flush most of the old shit out before I put the new oil in.
Wanted to know the best way to do this? Getting new oil is no problem, I have an abundance of that.
Would the best bet to drop all the oils, put in the new oil, cruise for a week or so, then drop that oil and refill? Cheers

if you drop all your oils while they are still hot or very warm you will get all the muck out that may be in there as the oil will be more fluid and rush out rather than drip out.

most of the drain plugs usually have a magnet on the inside of them which hold all the big pieces of metal that have busted off over time. I personally wouldnt bother doing it again in a week or so unless youve been doing heaps of mud runs without extended breathers or the like.
IF IT MOVES, SHOOT IT
IF IT DOESNT, CUT IT DOWN
IF ITS GREEN, PISS ON IT

It won't hurt dropping the oil after a week or so, if you want to do it, go ahead. It can only be beneficial.

I did this constantly with my coolant to get rid of crud out of the system. Drained and refilled about 6 times over a few weeks. It worked well :D

What he said...
Take it for a good drive first. Drop all the oils when they're warm. If they're murky or contaminated then refill them and do it all agaiin in a week or so. If they look ok then your done!
Dark oil is ok. Milky oil is bad means thev'ye got water in them.
Shinney oil is bad, usually means hrdening is coming off some bearings.
lots of metal filings is bad, a few metal bits is ok.

Cheers
