What shocks to buy
What shocks to buy
I have a Gq patrol with a 4-5 inch lift not sure came with springs in car.
It has come time to replace the rancho 9000 that are in it as there is no adjustment in them any more.
WHAT SHOCKS SHOULD I BUY.
I was going to buy koni but they dont make them for a gq with a 4in lift only 2 in.
I have been told tough dogs are crap any feed back please would be good.
Cheers
Mick

I had the EFS extreme shocks and EFS springs fitted and have been disapointed ever since. To start with it sagged 35mm on the passenger side after 2 weeks and all they done to fix it was put in spacers. I ordered a 4" lift but got 5" lift. Ok so after all the dramas its time to driving it, on road great off road at normal touring speeds shit, it feels like im getting rattled to bits. Hit some courgations and and your off the other side of the road (dangerous). Now where the my EFS suspension comes into its own is when im flying i mean racing flat out through the bush it works great. In my experience with EFS extremes they are a pure racing shock and thats it. Do yourself a favour and dont make the same mistake i did and cancell your order and buy something else. This is just my experience and opinion.beretta wrote:The new EFS Extremes are supposed to be pretty awesome, just been released, I'm supposed to be getting them next week.
I have been doing more reasearch on this I can get the koni shocks from a mack truck and revalve them for about $560 for the rear pair. Fronts out of a light bus that should not need to be done for about $360.
I think that koni would be better than rancho.
Also tough dogs are produced by Gabriel shocks that are very poor quailty so I will stay well away from them.
Does any one know what warrenty rancho come with??

Search is your friend.michael a wrote:Why do you not like the rancho shocks??.
Myself and others have had them replaced numerous times under warranty only to throw them in the shit tin. they are good on smaller cars.
I've triedOr the other brands mentioned what $ would I be looking at.
Koni
TJM Series 2000
Rat-chito
OME LTR/L series
and back to Konis
you will get many varied costs and opinions as you can see in this thread.
I've got 4" EFS springs and shocks, not the extremes. I've had them in for about 6yrs now and have given them a real hard time without sway bars fitted. For the past 2-3yrs i've also been running 30mm coil spacers. So, in other words, i'm running 4" shocks with 5" springs, std. bump stops, no sway bars, and they're still going strong.
They were quite cheap when i bought them too as they were a less popular brand than the OME, rancho's, etc. Not sure what they're worth now.

I'd say go for the OME 'L' series. I ran these all last season and they were lasting better than the guys with EFS ie I didn't have to replace them and I saw a few EFS replaced. That is from watching the guys within 2 places of me in National comp. I'm replacing one (each side) of my front shocks with OME LTR's but that is due to damage to the shock not wear and tear. The only reason for LTR's is so that I can adjust them and rebuild them, due to the lighter weight of my truck now.
Another idea for Koni would be to check LC 80 series shocks for length. With 4-5 lift and extended bumpstops they would be pretty close, but I haven't check, just an idea.

93 Nissan Pathfinder / Terrano Turboed VH45, GQ Trans and T-case, coil overs, hydraulic winch and fair bit of other stuff. (Currently a pile of parts in the workshop)
You can buy konis for big lifts!!! They are the 88 series koni designed here in australia they are about $1000 for the 4 which i think is pretty competitive. I know this because i was going to buy a set, but i decided to go for the 90 series in sted(these are the truck shocks). The only thing is with these (90 series) is that you cant get the draft in the back so you have to compramise 2 inchs which means u have to raise your rear shock mounts. For me this is not an issue as IMO aside from kings and Fox (more money again) the koni 90series is the best on the market
You cant rebuild ranchos but it is possible to re valve them. They wont last! i had some did 1 trip and they seemed fine. Next trip they lasted about 5 min internally hemeraged 1 and boiled beyond return the others.
Hope this is of help
Cheers

Ok,
Koni has still not been able to get back to me with a part number or any help I have tried every koni dealer and still no help. Customer service NONE
Procomp in Melb told me that tough dogs would be the go over there procomp shocks
Efs waiting for a reply
To run the LTR's what moods are required?
To replace the rancho is going to cost 400 a pair will not give a trade price the tight ass.
Does some one with a 4-5 lift have konis that could give me a part number??
