which shock for comps?Edelbrocks?
I was out having a play on the weekend and snapped one of my shockers in half.
I have a set of fox racing shocks in at the moment, just the oil shocks not expensive ones.
My 4x4 is a Ford Maverick with 5" lift and is a winch challenge car.
I was going to run a set of Tough Dogs, but I am starting to hear some bad things about them.
I dont want to run Ranchos either.
I am thinking about a set of Pro Comp shocks or the new EFS Extremes.
What advice have you got to offer?.
I have had a look at the Pro Comp shocks on the net but I dont know which one will best suit my application.
Any help would be much appreciated.

is to do dual shock setup koni and OME in the front and either single koni in the rear or OME's.

Pro comps definately. A lot cheaper than the others and most likly a lot stronger and better. I am very interested in the new EFS Extreme's. There other shocks seem to have no problems. Would not mind seeing how they go. They look and sound like the goods.

another bonus is that koni is rebuidable and all the others are throw away
*pro comp
*OME
*TJM
*EFS
*Rancho, ect ect
the next step up from koni in quality is like race runner, fox, kings
Bilstiens is another good rebuildable shock around the same level as the koni

The new EFS Extremes sound very cool, I am supposed to have a set going on my car (5" lift) in the next week or two, once they're on I can let you know what they're like. Pretty keen to get them on there and have a play, I've "heard" lots of bad stuff about Tuff Dogs too, but my friends who have them, love them, just not sure how they'd go in winch challenge comps with the constant beatings they would get. Whereas EFS are proven in the comps and the spec of the new Extremes sounds pretty awesome!
re:shocks
The local 4wd shop won't sell Tough Dogs anymore because of the amount of returns and warranty jobs they had with them.
I've also never met anyone who has rebuilt a shock ever. But I have seen plenty of people snap shocks. My 2c is the procomps as I've never heard a bad thing about them.

What's the difference between ignorance and apathy? I don't know and I don't care.

The guy on hear that sell pro comp shocks is 4wdstuff by memory. You can get koni to suit large lifts they just need to be custom made and that is expensive. Billstien will do them aswell, that will be a made to order aswell. Why dont you look into getting fox shocks?
Its not cool, unless it's got boost :)
I got some long travel Konis. But yes they are rebuilt and hopefully revalved truck shocks. I brought mine 2nd hand. And havent fitted them yet.MARKx4 wrote:The guy on hear that sell pro comp shocks is 4wdstuff by memory. You can get koni to suit large lifts they just need to be custom made and that is expensive. THOUGHT FOR THE DAY....
If possible Beretta, could you post up the shock lengths, open and closed, before you fit them?beretta wrote:The new EFS Extremes sound very cool, I am supposed to have a set going on my car (5" lift) in the next week or two, once they're on I can let you know what they're like. Rang EFS direct and they couldn't give me shock measurments ... ... but were happy to sell me some if I wanted !?!?!

I sure can measure them up for you, they are hopefully going on the car on Saturday, will measure them and post up the lengths.
They're a 45mm tube with 20mm shaft. Valved specifically for particular vehicle mass, ie valved specifically for a Patrol mass etc so they should be awesome, heard some good things about them from some dudes that got the first sets to come out.
Not sure who you rang but their toll free number is 1800 246 281, maybe give that a try if you like.

I am starting to think that I might give the EFS Extreme's a go.
I might wait until I hear how they are.
Another brand I seen when I was up at tuff trucks in '06' was
Edelbrock shockers.
They looked all right.
Does any one have any information on them?.
I am just looking at all my options.

91 mav, 35"simex's, front and rear air lockers, 5" lift.
yeah got the edelbrock red upside down shocks on my suzuki can't give an opnion on them yet in comp use as the cars not finished but around my property they feel sweet and recovered very well on the landing when i jumped my car at speed 40km\hr felt quite controled but bear in mind that is a light carcruiserkid wrote:I am starting to think that I might give the EFS Extreme's a go.

Rang Melb as well as a 1300 (Brisbane R&D) number I was given but got the "they're only new, so no specs yet" story ...beretta wrote:I sure can measure them up for you, they are hopefully going on the car on Saturday, will measure them and post up the lengths.

personal opinion on edelbrocks - a marketing ploy. of course they will run cooler if they offer little rebound dampening and have less dapening under vibration. they are a cheap shock in the states. i looked into it in depth and at 1200-1500 for a properly set up shock with adj dampening etc I couldn't see it. I was happy to spend the dollars and i went fox triple bypass. i am happy with my decision except i ordered mine in the beginning costing $1250 a shock before the $950 you can get them for now. after obc gregs are fine and even the bushes (spherical bearings) are not worn.

They are very new, I heard they were slightly delayed from their November release date, I've been waiting for them to come in, but I think they'll be worth waiting for from what I am told. Will take some pics to post up also.RoldIT wrote:Rang Melb as well as a 1300 (Brisbane R&D) number I was given but got the "they're only new, so no specs yet" story ...beretta wrote:I sure can measure them up for you, they are hopefully going on the car on Saturday, will measure them and post up the lengths.

Even including the wizzy U.S off-road race shocks ( FOX, King, Racerunner, etc) Koni and Bilstein are the only shock companys that have developed product for racing up to F1 level. The most money Tough Dog, Rancho and the other generic Co-fab built shocks spend on development is in the marketing stage. Dont buy this shite, i cant believe people still fork over money for such junk.

this is exactly why i went fox. a shaft is like $70 seals are $22 a set, shims are cheap as, you can change the oil weight and tune them yourself and they are cheaper long term. you have them foreverWooders wrote:On my heep I've run Racho then OME and now Edelbrock - and they are definately a step up from the Rancho/OME.
But I;m thinking of Bilsteins next....

Just want some prices.
Pretty sure he is the importer also.
Personal opinion only, but I would go for the EFS Extremes, but hey go do your research. Shaun is a very helpful person and will explain the Edelbrocks construction etc.
