Light setup ideas

Post by vicelore »

Hey guys

well its pay day thinking of doin some kinda light set up on my rig.

i seen a fj driving around with 4 rectangle lights over the windscreen . they where mounted on like a u shaped steel tube. that mounted down on what looked like the hinges for the windscreen. i only seen the car driving past so didnt get to look at it for too long.

the lights will mostly be for looks as i dont/havent done much night driving. tho i would like them to perform if needed.

so i would like some pics guys of peoples setups. some ideas would be kool too.

Cheers

U got a bar?

On the roof is illeagle i believe as they have to be hooked up right. Depends on where u are.

I am runnin just 4 spots on a arb bar, plenty of light for night, i am also upgrading the main lights up to 100w high and 60w low.

First question is: Have you done much else in the way of modding your rig?

Reason for the question is that IMHO, a zook would look cr@p with lotsa lights like that, but stock suspension and tyres.

Try a bit of a search coz I'm pretty sure roof/windscreen lights and mounting has been covered several times before.

remove the little rubber bump stop things on top of the windscreen and attach a bar to that and then attach your lights to that. my bro used to have two lights attached to these and it worked great as the lights didn't stick up above the roof line and thus didn't get knocked off with low hanging brances

yea that sounds like a good idea.

how hard would this be to wire up ? you cant just run a circuit from the + on the bat to a switch then back to the - on it with a light inbetween can you ? i take it its not that easy.

u guys recon it would look crappy ?

Mine, bit diffrent to what you are looking for but if you have them that close to the bonnet, when you turn them on you will be blinded by the reflection unless u run bibs under the lights..mine still lit up the end of the bonnet even where they where there!!

umm no LOL
u will need like a relay and stuff, i ran mine of one relay but it kinda welded its self together once. so 2 relays and 50W globes is the go.
when you buy the kit it should come with the relay, swich and instructions etc

hey red zook . nah i was after setups like yours as i was unsure of what i want.

yours are just mounted on a roof rack ? that might require a cut in the soft top for me i think. well yea defently would. unless it was infront the door .

what type are your lights and how much 4 set you back ?

Cheers

mine are on a roof rack that i cut about 8inches off to match zook roof.. you could just drill them though your roof.. dont laugh i have sceen it done before!
lighst cost me a total of $50  just supercheep crap. because if you break em there cheep to replace.
i put mine on there mainly so wheen offroad if i stuck the nose under in a hole i could still see!! (nearly wrote the zook of becasue of that)

Fab yourself up a front bar which replaces the stock plastic junk and just throw your lights on there.

yea i would LOVE to be able to make one. even to weld would be awesome.

i used up a last favour off a very busy mate just to get the standard one modded to fitt.

but i recon i could get a bit of tubing cut it to size and drill some holes to make one of them.

so i might do that see how it goes.

what type of lights would i be looking at buying. to have 4 simular ones to red zooks ?? as in watt ?? and price.

Cheers

Mate just give it ago. Thats how i learnt. Get yourself a cheap 140 watt stick welder and practice laying nice penetrating beads on scrap. Then when your ready get the local muffler shop to bend up what u need and weld it up.

lights

Post by benjamin78au »

the quesion is what are you doing it for? more light or looks
As per you request on ppls setups, i looked in to the roof lights and have them on workute, On my car however i went with good headlights, and a good pair of spotties. i get plenty of depth, slow windy work i have plenty of spread. I spent a bit of money , on light, as i kinda afraid of the dark.

I run hid lights headlamps , and turn then lightforce 240s only when need to on open stretchs.

Like others have legalities, could be yout concern as well.

well yea i did it was mostly for looks purpose as i havent really wheeled at night. but i would like them to be decent if i want to in the future.

u guys know if they are illegal on the front of the windscreen ? not that it matters much it would just be as illegal as the rest of the car.

THE other thing is i have seen a few pairs get ripped off the roof but abouve the windscreen should be good!

That Ebay bar looks well setup!

I had a roof light setup on my zuk for a while, until it lay over, and bent the bar (might have saved some damage)

I used L brackets to bolt off the screw on the inside of the door on the targa bar, then had a frame welded onto that. It suited my resin top, and would also suit soft tops. Might have to weld a few more up if there is the demand for them.

This is probably the best pic i have of it.

I see that there are lots of people who run 4-6 and some times more driving lights on there truck.

What i am wondering is how do these get powered, as the suzuki's altinator is only good for about 35-40 amps (and thats at 2000+rpm) and the current draw of 1x100Watt driving light is 8 amps.

Do many people have charging problems/flat batteries or have most people done altinator upgrades on there Zooks.

Cheers

I didn't have problems with running high beam and 4 x 100W on the roof, just had to switch them off at idle.

Now i have upgraded the alt due to the winch.
