Well i'm finally going to bite the bullet and update the 75 series, and more than likely change teams from Toyota to Nissan.
At the moment I've got a '93 1HZ Trayback. For the last 8 years that I have had it, it has been a fantastic vehicle and still is, but I have decided that my next vehicle will have coil springs and a fair bit more power, so either a turbo or petrol gas.
Going to go a station wagon this time for something different and I am in the market for a good 100 series or a GU. I love the Cruisers don't get me wrong but they are quite a bit more expensive than the nissans especially if you are looking at a turbo. I would like to find something that has already had a few accessories put on it so I can save a bit of money there. I don't want anything with more than about 170,000km on it and my price bracket is between $20 and $30k at the most.
Is it just me or are the realalisticly priced 4.2 turbo Patrols as rare as rocking horse s@%t? Plenty around in the tray model but not the wagons. There seem to loads of 3.0ltrs around, but I have seen and heard of too many horror stories when it comes to these motors. I know there are plenty out there that haven't had a problem, but I am a bit scared after seeing a mate fork out HUGE money to rebuild his after one of the bores cracked and another mate having the turbo die on him in his.
Is the extra price for the 4.8ltr worth it over the 4.5ltr? How much difference is there with power and fuel economy between the two and how many kms would I expect out of a tank?
We do quite a few 4x4ing trips every year and being close to the Vic High Country mainly concentrate around there.
If anybody knows of a good wagon either a 4.2 turbo or a duel fuel with a few accessories can you give me a yell and possibly send a few photos to philhod@tpg.com.au

Towing?
how many people?
what tires?
what liftkit?
wat mods?
what accessories??
etc.....
Petrols are thirsty, you would throw it on gas straight away.
Diesels are not rocketships, but thats fixable.

The poll is definatley in the 4.2 Turbos favour so far, as I expected.
It will be my daily driver so will include around town driving through the week and out of town highway and bush work most weekends.
I am not a slow driver and like to 'get up it' more often than not. I hate driving slow.
Won't be towing with it much at all. The only towing it will really do is the bike trailer with a couple of dirt bikes on it in the cooler months.
At the moment there is only me and the missus (oh and the dog, he's going to miss the ute).
Currently I have about a 3-4 inch lift on the cruiser and run 33 inch tyres. The patrol with have at least the same lift and more than likely 35's, but at least 33's.
Mod's will be: Lift, steel bullbar, driving lights, winch, snorkel, roofrack, draws, UHF, and decent mud tyres that will be on all the time. I always carry my recovery gear also. So yes, all up there is a fair bit of additional weight.
I seen that 4.2 on ebay (think that's the one your refering to) it's a bloody good looking rig and would be perfect, but it is out of my price range.

i have a 4.2 patrol turbo ute , put a 3 inch exhaust upped the boost to 10 psi and got it tuned and timing set in the pump got 35 % more go and it cost about $800 goes quite well get about 12 - 13 litres per hundred and tows really well too , i tow a 800 kg trailer when i go away and i still hardly ever leave 5th gear going down or up the coast from sydney.
Thanks guys, you have made my decision easeier. I reckon the power of the petrols would be great, but the fuel economey figures kind of scare me a bit especially with fuel being expensive Might just have to settle with a bit less power and opt for a 4.2.

ive got the 4.5lt petrol but wish i had the right oppotunity at the time to get the 4.2td as it would make going to the cape etc possible , as mine is on gas it is cheaper than a td to run just wont get past about 450km on the hwy per tank but as a fun 4wd come family camper/ daily shopping trolley etc on gas its a pretty cheap vehicle to run and maintain .

Well I look the advice of the majority of people here and settled upon buying a '99 4.2TD ST Patrol. It has already got a few acceseries on it inlcuding, bullbar, warn winch, snorkel, 2" OME suspension, IPF driving lights, duel batteries and tinted windows and cruise control.
The owner was an elderly lady owner who owns an antique business in Canberra. She has had it for the last 4 years. The service history is all documented and has just had a major service and new clutch fitted. I talked to the mechanic who does all the services and he thinks it is a great vehicle.
It had done a few more km's than what I was after (194,000) but I am confident it has been looked after well and HARDLY USED OFf ROAD AT ALL, (will soon change that). So will hopefully have plenty more miles in it yet.
She had it advertised for $30,000, ended up getting it for $29,000, she wouldn't come down anymore. Pick it up Saturday morning. Can't wait.
Now just gotta sell the cruiser. Anyone after a good 75 series ute with all the gear for $15,000?
