3 in should be fine, i have 3.5 on my supercharged shorty and it works well. We went shooping for A donaldson filter for my mates 3.5 carby rangie the other day and the salesman said a donaldson needs to be massive to provide enough air for the motor. To work out the cfm of the motor multiply engine hp X 2.5 and then go shopping for one, apparently he sold one to a guy with a gq and to get the right one for the job he had to mount it in the cab because it didn't fit under the bonnet
