im after some help on the following to suit this particular motor.its the carb 2litre single over head cam,16 valve.
apparently i cant get a manual on rebuilding this donk but mitsi will sell me a cd for $300.
torque settings on big ends and mains.
the process on lining up the cam,crank and balance shaft timing as its one belt.
im hoping this donk lines up with some of your engines in the 4by range or some one in the mechanical game that recognises the donk.it came out of a 2000 model express van............dont ask............

replace it with the 4G63T out of a an early model VR4 or evo, or the 4G93T out of the gsrs. Thats about the only help i can give, itd be cool to see, iv seen it before

Not a dumb question, but no.
Mitsubishi 4 cylinder engines come in "families." The Astron family are all 4G5 engine numbers, the 4G6 series are Sirius family. I think the 4G9 engines are Sirius series with Mivec (variable valve timing, essentially) heads.
I've only heard the Astron 2 name used with the 4G54 2.6 litre engine. I think it came with the introduction of unleaded petrol, but I'm not positive. Definitely arrived in the Sigma days, all Magnas 4G54s are Astron 2. The pre-Astron 2 4G54 engines are now referred to as Astron 1.
I'm not sure on all of the differences, either. Astron 2 generally has flat top pistons and larger combustion chambers, where Astron 1s had dished pistons and smaller chambers. To confuse the issue, I think the 2.6 engines in the Scorpion (fully imported) had the flat tops too. I don't know what the Pajeros have.
Astron 2 has hydraulic lifters, and somewhere along the line they also picked up larger ports and valves. Very late model heads have different shaped combustion chambers, which (I believe) helps emissions but not power.
Now, let's hope somebody can tell us what I've got wrong.

well i have no idea but it sounds like u know your stuff , is the sireus motor the same as the astron bolt up patern and what did these motors come in?

The 2.6 has two bolt patterns, often referred to as "wide" or "narrow." The narrow pattern was used for automatic Sigmas, and matches the smaller Astron engines (2.0 & 1850) and the Saturn range. It possibly matches the Sirius engines, but I don't know for sure. Wide pattern was used in 2.6 manual Sigmas, but I don't know what's in the Pajero.
If you want to replace an Astron, I think your best bet is rebuild and add fuel injection - Magna EFI should be your cheapest option, with the benefit of minimal registration hassles. The other option worth considering is the 2.4i (4G64) motor from later model Tritons. I don't really know what's involved, but I want to know. Wanna find out for me?

the pajero is a wide block the l200 had a narrow block early l2oo had a 2.0 astron 4g52 the later ones had a sirus 4g63 i have in the past i have changed a from a sirus to a astron the alternator was on a wrong side we had to lengthen the wires we used the same radiator but had to change the hoses. this info leads me to think ? that the sirus is the same patern as the norrow block unless its available in wide aswell from memory the narrow block is 310mm from dowel to dowel the wide is 330mm hope this helps you can get a 2.6 in the nrrow block but they can be hard to find

Astrons are older, Sirius are newer.
Most of the Sirius range came fuel injected, with 4 valves per cylinder. Astrons are all 2 valve.
The 4G54, at 2.6 litres, can produce torque easier and cheaper than any Sirius motor (it was originally designed as a light truck motor - for low rpm torque.) The 2.4 4G64 can compete for torque, but it is more complex, more expensive and it has a longer stroke with a smaller bore, so high revs (=power) are still a problem.
For outright power for a street application, money not an issue, I'd be looking at the 4G64 or 4G94 motor.
For an offroad 4wd, leaving the motor in stock form, I'd look to the 4G64.
If you want bang for bucks, either street or offroad, go the 2.6 Astron.

Sound like you know your mitsy engines scotty.... the only thing i know is that i have a 4G93 engine in my lancer and it is not Mivec or VCT. Just a SOHC engine that i reckons packs a punch for a 1.8.

Astron 2 has flat top pistons to give a CR of 8.8 (Astron 1 is 8.2).
Astron 2 has 3mm larger diameter valves and slightly bigger ports.
Astron 2 has hydraulic lifters.
Astron 2 has larger resin bodied carby from factory.
Astron 2 produced 83Kw & 200Nm, the final Astron 1 version produced 76Kw & 192Nm (initial or 1st version produced 73Kw & 184Nm).
Leaded carby Magna motor was identical except for FWD orientation.
Unleaded carby Magna lost 5Nm = 83Kw & 195Nm
EFI version had 93Kw & 205Nm these were for the TM/TN/TP models.
For the TR/TS models there were further improvements in the EFI system, CR was up to 9.2 and some other detailed changes with the combustion chambers which they called high swirl/lean burn system.
Power was up to 98Kw & 218Nm on unleaded and 102Kw & 224Nm on premium.
The GK Scorpion had the imported 2.6 which was known in the industry as the large valve head 2.6. It produced 78Kw & 182Nm it still had 8.2 CR and the smaller carby.
I put one of these motors into a GH Scorpion and it did go noticeably harder compared to the local Oz 2.6 - it defintely revved better.
I also put a Astron 2 into a GK wagon and it went MUCH better compared to the Astron 1.
So definitely the TR/TS Astron 2 is the best donk if your not going to turbo just do the EFI conversion. So with some extractors/exhaust and tinkering 110Kw would be no probs.

the scorpion 2.6 i think is the narrow block you will need the head off a series 2 astron if you want to magna efi the easiest way to tell a series 2 head it has 4 bolts at the back jurnal of the camshaft two at normal hight two lower this will bolt to the efi manifold the series 1 will only have two bolts early sirus engines were carb they were around 83/84 in the l200 i have seen two early ones have starter motor problems with no 4 conrod removing them from the bell housing.the later efi seem to be a reliable engine

ok all very helpfull , so i should look for a late model astron 2 and use magna efi or just use the whole magna engine in wide pattern form ?

yeh i'm pising off my 1hz and putting a 2.6l 4 pot in so i can make it rev.
but on the other hand it would make a nice sculpture.
But on a serius note it's going in a asia roctsa if i get one as i'm told it will bolt strait in.

OK - I see now.
Typically, when you replace an engine you're expected to keep the most up to date emissions stuff in place - how old is the Rocsta? If you choose an engine which is newer than the car, you'll be expected to install all the emissions stuff from the new engine.
Emissions aside, TR/TS Magna motor and fuel injection would be a good choice, but there's a few complications - in the Magna it's an east-west configuration, which doesn't translate that well to North-South.
The intake to the plenum chamber (throttle body) will point towards the rear, so you will probably need to get that cut and shut to the front.
The thermostat housing will likewise be near the firewall, and difficult to access. You might want to cut and shut that while you're with an aluminium welder.
I think the waterpump is driven off the rear of the camshaft - again, firewall gets in the way. You can either fit a Sigma/Pajero timing case to the front, or go hi-tech with an electric water pump. I haven't really thought much about which would be better - good luck.
Sump and oil pickup may need to be fiddled too...

If you're happy to rebuild a motor, start with an ex-Sigma smoker for all the North-South stuff, replace the dished pistons with flat tops (for compression) and bolt a Magna top end onto it. The folks at sigma-galant.com should be able to help you when it comes to mixing and matching pistons and heads.
