Looking at putting 285/75R16 tyres on the patrol which I understand is about 33".
What does everybody do about the legality of these? In Queensland the limit is that the outside diameter of the tyres can only be 15mm more the the original equipment. Original is 275/65R17 (OD 790mm). 285/75R16 equates to an outside diameter of 833mm (an increase of 43mm).
Worried less about getting pulled up by the cops and more about insurance implications and getting a claim rejected!
Any advice given you see plenty of trucks out there with oversize tyres?

I have them. Yes it is illegal. My insurance company knows and doesnt seem to care, although they havent had to pay out on a big accident.
33"s the cops dont seem to blink at. 3"'s they do, but it depends on condition of car, driving behaviour etc.
To be perfectly legal you need to keep your tyres down to about 32.4" (822.9 mm). The closest legal tyre to this size I can think of would be a 275/75/16

See link below, it appears to apply to 4wd passenger vehicles but not light commercials. The rim diameter may be varied from the standard size
but the overall diameter of the tyre must not vary by
more than +15mm or -26mm.
To be 100% sure get the car engineered with the larger wheels on it. If thats not really an option then risk it the cops wont really pick it and if you did have a bust up change the before your car was looked at by the insurance people. If though it was so badly beaten up that the wheels can't be changed count yourself lucky to still be alive.

I have 33's on my GQ. Have only a 2" Suspension Lift and it clears easily. 33's on a GU will go with-out lift.
From my research, the Insurance Company only cares about Rim Size (width to be more precise). From my research they won't insure a 15x10 on a GQ but will a 15x8. They don't care about the tyre size.
However, if your tyre size exceeds the Legal size, your insurance is as good as void anyway!
Take your chances.
