refinishing a tray

hi all

i have a tray back to suit my new 81 Hilux.

it is made out of steel rhs/box section tube
with a checkerplate floor

it is currently painted black
but the paint is all scuffed up and there is some moderate rust bubbling the paint off in some places.

the rust is crusty in some places but not affecting the structure yet

how is the best way to remove the existing paint (sand, sandblast, stripper, etc)
clean the rust back to clean metal (sand, converter, acid)
and refinish the thing? (powdercoat, paint acrylic/2pac)

want it to be affordable, i have access to 12cfm and acrylic gun.
if going 2pac i would need to get it sprayed etc. professionally

i went through this befor chrissy, probly the best way to do it was to pull the floor out of the tray and take the frame to a sand blaster have it cleaned up and either put a new floor in or just cleen ur old one up and weld it back into place, prime it up then paint it 2 pack . some sand blasters have painting faciliteis in there shops so u may be bale to to that.

If you want it to look pretty good then get it blasted and powdercoated by a good powder coater.

Acrylic is obvously your cheapest option but it's rubbish. It's dull and even when buffed up doesn't hold gloss and is now where near as durable as 2 pack or powdercoat.

2 pack is good but wont fill sandbast pits, requires more prep and would probably work out dearer than powdercoat.

A good powdercoater will have the gear to blast it, prime it and paint it.

Cheers mick.

I don't know what sandblasters charge (maybe $100) but I reckon you could get it powdercoated for about $300 at a guess.

To paint in 2 pack i'd say you would be looking at about $500.

Prices vary heaps so I would ring a few places and get some prices.

Cheers Mick.
