Hi all,
Im a newbie to these forums but have frequented performance forums for a while.
Im keen on a 4x4 dual cab hilux, with a proper ute back ie solid sides(whats the correct name for these??)
I have about $8,000 but would prefer to buy something a bit cheaper and if anything breaks replace it with bigger and better parts... I pay nothing for labour...
So I want to know what models I should be looking at?
and which to stay away from?
Ive heard that the diesel turbos need to be looked after alot more than the petrols, but that the petrols are very thirsty, and that conversions from cars can lead to problems because of the angles 4x4's get too. And also to stay away from the IFS versions.... anyone able to confirm/deny these?
thanks
Cory

IFS stands for
Is Farken Sh1t
An extra cab or twin cab from 84 to 88 would be the best bet for those dollars.
If you look around heaps you should be able to get one with quite a few mods on it. Might even be able to get one with a V6 or V8 allready in it but at that price you`d be lucky, add another 2g to the price and you`d get one with heeps of goodies on it as well as the V6 or V8.
Petrol or desiel? well thats a biggy as they both have there good and bad points, basicly I`d just say get what ever comes up at the write price.

I've got an 86 Dual cab 2.4diesel Ute and have replaced Timing belt (every 100,000) , Alternator and Starter motor and it has just passed 250,000 k's
with Diesel's you have to keep up the Services if you want the thing to be around for a while ( Oil change every 5000 same with a 2.8d ).
I don't think that you will get much for less than $8000 but i can be wrong
mine can be Seen in the members Section ( just do a search) or in
Tips and Tracks :- anyone been to Gembrook Lately ( on page 4 is a link fro some pics last weekend )
Hope this has been of sone help.

what to buy
if you doing a fair amount of off road only go diesel - gives the best torwue at low revs. - like early mentioned diesels must have oil changed every 5000km and injectors checked every 15000km, also due to the natural of a diesel's operation (ie no spark plugs) alot better for reliability and water crossings. 2.8 diesel is an excellent engine only problem is the 3rd cylinder i think sometimes loses compression - do a compression check onwed a 2.8 for a couple of year before my current truck really good truck. live axel front and rear is awesome for articulation - don't rush to buy take about 2-3 months to find the right truck, best of luck
