Dash gauges stopping

Post by nicbeer »

Not a 4x4 but on my DD.

Proton hatch.

Dash gauges are stopping every now and again. getting more and more frequent. often only the temp gauge and somtimes the speedo.

A quick rap on the plastic cover and it comes working again.

Any ideas - btw when speedo stopped odo is still working. I am thinking dry joints but would hitting them make it work?

This happens on my mums VP Commodore.
I borrowed it one time to tow a trailer to a job. Was a hot day and I was cruising up some big arse hills on the highway and overtaking etc, keeping an eye on the temp gauge when I saw the oil light come on! Now I know the idiot light only comes on when it is almost too late so I pulled straight off the road and shut her off.
When I switched the key back on the temp gauge went right off the top of the dial!!! It had been sticking in the normal opperating temp :x
After I gave it an hour or so to cool down I wound her over and it barely turned it was so tight but it eventually fired up and is still going strong today :)

NFI how to fix it though :D
The bloke at Holden tried to sell me new gauges

I'd take the dash appart, get a DMM and check continuity between the gauge contacts and the wires.

If it's higish probably dry/loose joints, wiggle the cable around a bit and see if it changes as well.

Also can check what juju said. Continuity to earth as well.

The reason I say earth is casue the whole cluster drops out, mostly there will be only 1 earth for the whole lots of but multiple +ive's.

Thought there may be a single common +ive feed too

DO the dash lights go out too ??

I agree, bad earth
Common problem on xd falcon clusters, usually drops one half of the cluster, intermittently, it'd be the first thing I'd check

Nope lights are all ok. only temp and speedo do it. tach/fuel are always ok. may be one or multiple earths.

keep em coming. tends to work once tapped apon.

The speedo i have noticed if u dont tap it and leave it alone not working it will kick in in a min or so after driving.
