FITTED 3" MANDREL TO GU COIL CAB
FITTED 3" MANDREL TO GU COIL CAB
Just fitted a MTQ 3" mandrel bent exhaust with muffler yesterday ( Sat.).
Exhaust $575
Dump pipe $165
Could'nt fault the dump pipe.
But the exhaust was an ill fitting bloody thing.
The engine pipe pushes the flex joint hard against the transfer actuator to the point I had trouble getting the pipe on the studs at the dump pipe.
The rubber mount the muffler hangs from is streched to one side. I'll have to make a small bracket to rectify the problem.
The tail pipe I had to cut short as it was fowling against the bolt holding the tow bar. Even then I had to add a rubber bush to the hanging bracket to keep the tail pipe of the chassis.
This hanging bracket I had to modify as it would not pull up tight on the tail pipe
At least now I don't have any rattles.
I did'nt do anything up tight until the whole system was hanging so I could try and make adjustments.
I guess this expected of an aftermarket exhaust.
I could be wrong but I don't see the benifit of the 3" as where the engine pipe slips into the dump pipe it is reduced to approximately 2.5".
My way of thinking is the system is only as good as it's smallest dia!!
But after all this I have'nt noticed any great difference in performance.
Next up I'll have to try some work on the pump and see if I can get some inprovement in that area.
Any idea's on what can be done to improve performane pump wise and boost and approximate cost?
Thanks.
Al.

i still cant understand why people buy these pre fabbed exhausts when you can get any decent shop to make and fit one for same money if not less
i paid 300 for my mandrel bent 3 inch and some inlet pipeing, no mufflers tho
especially when the pre fabbed one doesnt bolt straight in.
and mtq dump pipes are not a real 3 inch im sure this has been posted a few times b4
did you notice any performance gain?

Jet it was from Denco diesel in Wagga
Badger, the reason I ordered it was because I work away in the bush during the week and it gives me the only chance to fit one on weekends.
If you compare the differrence between the original and the new dump pipe it is quite substancial.
I could be wrong but I could'nt see how the dump pipe could be any larger as you would run out of room as it is almost againt one of the studs on the turbo as it is.
It would be interesting to know if there was a larger dump internally.

A place that builds custom exhausts. Get what you want to fit right. Its not as costly as people seem to think. Just shop round, or if you are handy with a welder, build your own.GUte wrote:OK Badger, you seem to be the one with all the know.
Who supplies these REAL 3" dump pipes?
Search results for the size argument
Just between me and you, I actually really dig the Megatwon, but if anyone asks, I'm going to shitcan it as much as possible! :D
from what i believe the 3" dump pipe offered by MTQ for their trbo kits is actually 2.5" for about an inch off the turbo, then into a 3" bend, and this is because they use an oval flange on their turbos and it is the size of the exhasut housing,
ive never seen what they have done on their other kits, pics bould help if you had them mr GUte

I have only just been through all this with my MQ ute, I wanted a 3" dump pipe straight from the back of the turbo to the tip of the pipe, the exhuast shop I went to said that 3" pipe was to large a diameter to bend, my only option was to run 2.5" out of turbo, through a 90degree turn then step to 3" pipe for approx. 1.3m to dump on the ground. I was a little disapointed that it wasn't 3" all the way through but.... I did notice a difference in sound and spool up, used to spool up at about 2200rpm, now starts whistle'n at about 1850rpm, so mod was well worth it, no muffler as well so it is reasonably loud. i thought about getting the exhaust flange welded to some 3" flex for the bend so I could maintain true 3" but am a little unsure due to heat and potental for blow through on the flex....
