breathers on the diffs

Post by tazzazuk »

i just used 10mm fuel hose to go over the out let. has any one used this and will it last long or will it tear cause it is so stretched? is it worth putting brethers on the gear box and tranfer?

gearbox also
yeah i used garden hose also since it hasn't been used for like 4 years
this is what i used

7 hose clamps
1 fuel filter
1 copper t bar
1 piece of clear tube from bunnings to sleeve the fuel filter tips so the the garden hose could fit over it snugly

what I've heard is you gotta tap your transfer case an put an elbow in it so you can fit the hose on right

Along the chassis near the brake lines and up into the engine bay!

diff breathers

Both my diffs, gearbox and transfer breath through 5/8" hose which goes to inside of firewall behind dash. the last place to fill with water.

For a little car theres a bloody lot to do isn't there? Gears, Lockers, Springs, Shocks,Rollbars, Spotlights, Winches, Bash guards, Breathers, Rim offset,CUSTOM DOORS etc , etc, etc.....Every time I tick one thing off the list, I find theres two or three more on it!

breathers

Post by atari4x4 »

i extended mine front & back into the engine bay, using mini fuel filters, trimmed the barbs on 2 sides & used alloy valve caps with the o'ring removed as dust/moisture cap. need to get another filter & extend gearbox/transfer breather still....

May be stupid question!

BUT arnt the caps on the top a bad thing because the reason you put breathers on is so it can suck in air and not water?

With the valve caps on top it's not sucking the air in there it will be doing through the axel seals and stuff wont it? :?

I don't have caps or filters on mine. I found that with only two filters for four hoses they wouldn't let enough air in fast enough. I should try four filters but thats a job for another day. Small diameter hose is no good either.

Nice job atari4X4

Suzuki boy - yes, you are sort of right, but generally what happens is that the caps get junk and dust under them and when they start to pull shut they don't seal and you get water in anyway.

IMHO 10mm fuel hose is the best "easy" way. ANY pvc hose, (garden hose, etc) will be OK, but will eventually get hard and break. In the front, the normal trick is to feed the hose up through the engine mount on the chassis.

However, the 10mm hose tends to be very stiff and bulky in the front and a)looks hack and b) the angle the front breather goes through as it goes up through the engine mount.

Here is the way I do it - Note - you really have to do this with the diff centre out.

pop the cap off
cut the cap stub off at the groove
run a 1/8" BSP tap through the stub
thread a 1/8" barb onto the stub
fit the fuel hose of your choice.
On the front, run a 90deg. elbow before the barb - this will allow you to bring the hose up away from the chassis etc.

I think this is much neater than the fat hose method, although I have done this too and if you have no reason to open the diff, this is the easy way.

PS IMHO having ANY breather running into the cabin is a bad idea - of you ever roll the car, not only will you have a rolled car, you will have the contents of the diffs/gearbox/transfer etc all through the dash/interior. this will suck badly :D the best place for the breather to run into is the snorkel or the airbox.

Mugginsmoo runs balloons on the end of his hoses, and swears by this. This might be the best way to run them inside the cab without stink, or in the engine bay without fear of dust /water contamination

+1. Mine used to run to the airbox and feed through the disused hot air feed, but this changed when i changed my diffs over. Dont run them inside for the reason Steve said. I have seen the balloons run straight of the diff, but i think that the are too vunerable there. I like the idea though, fully sealed system.

i trimmed the barbs off 2 side on the top of the filter so valve cap still screws on & you can blow thru it easy & they only just screw on as a bit of bling & protection.
