Re: disco 1 auto problems
Could be
1 the ball joint above the rear axle. check with big lever.
2 Just backlash in the LT230 gears.
3 wear in the output shaft from the auto to the transfer.
Usually not the auto but further along the drive train.

My understanding is that the 81-85 high comp in Australia only had a unique cam with close lobe centres to meet emission regs .
These motors also had an air injection pump with 4 ports into the exhaust for afterburn and unique aircleaners with heating from the exhaust manifold .

Just a few general principles
1 You must have a shroud that fits tightly around the fans whether they be mechanical or electric
2 The shroud must be sealed where it meets the radiator so that there is no stray air going around it.
I personally am a fan(LOL) of viscous fans as the implied HP of one ...

Lower the voltage , leaner the mixture.
Maybe you had bad contacts on the plug and the ECU was in Limp Home and disturbing it cleaned it .
To keep it good, just twist the contacts in the plug a LITTLE bit to get better contact.

Re: 14cux. Engine rpm dips and coughs on throttle with cold
Jepper, regardless of you checking, I would be pretty sure that you have a major air leak into the manifold somewhere that is causing your high rev idle.
If you do not have a leak it is impossible for it to idle at 1500RPM unless the throttle blade is way out of adjustment. Why not close down the ...

This is very common on old engines. Apparently from cavitation in the pump.
Graeme Cooper used to have them welded and the oil pump repaired and sell them as reconditioned.
So it is pretty certain they can be aluminium welded.
