illegal or not?

hey guys
i wanna cut my front bumper on my 40 but i dont know if its illegal or not! i want to cut it just either side of the chassis rails where the red lines are in the pic below! is it illegal or not?

i cant see a problen with it.

Internet opinions such as "I cant see a problem with it" dont really help much. Your best bet would be to call someone who would know (that may prove easier said than done).

"But he said he cant see a problem with it" wont stand up in an encounter with RN's crew.

I would think it would be illegal!

Just because if you hit a person you could chew em up a bit! Where as with the bar they will end up on your bonnet! ;)

BUT check it out and it's not illegal untill you get caught! :?

will you can make it longer or shorter or just leave it what ever it is. but i know if you get hit by it..it's is not going to tickle

Just ring up an engineer or your states road thing(In vic it's vicroads!) they should be able to tell you straight away! :cool:

Yes its illegal. But im sure there have been vehicles engineered in the past like that. But as far as ADRs go it will fail.

I do have something similar on mine though, but I have a full width bullbar above it. Was stopped by transport once and they didn't bat an eyelid, also no problems with engineer, but when it was re-rego'd recently it caused some concern to the guy doing the safety cert.

That would not be legal in any state I've lived in. It is the exposure of the front tyres that they would never let pass.

It's a pity, because it would undoubtedly improve off-road capability in at least some situations, and look a shitload better.

If I were really determined to do it, I would probably take the original bumper off, and make a new one in the size you're suggesting out of C-section steel. Then if anyone pulls you up on it. you have the old one to bolt back on.

Or, you could modify it by cutting, adding some plates and welding some nuts in the right places so that the sides can be out back on for daily driver use, and removed off-road. Maybe that's a bit much work for an old yota though.

ill just get a new one made up and keep the stock one! and there is never enough work for these old cars, they are like a never ending project! :armsup:

I inquired about the same sort of thing, but on a Sierra. blue slip fella said he would pass it as long as it covered the ends of the chasiss & ther were no sharp bit exposed. But i dont know how much trust id put in him.

The Hummer replica went over the pits for licencing with the sort front bar, they did'nt say a thing about it

i ran a bumper like that for a while (a peice of c channel covering the chassis rails) didnt have a problem... but that was just driving aroung... not sure about legalities.

if yout onlu looking at cuttin it off for offroad to help with the approach angle, you could always make them removable, at least when your doing daily suties you will be covered,

mate i have had mine rego'd a few times just like that. with tube front bar.
got failed first time as ther were bolts protruding forward.\mates dad said hey dude grind those off and its all sweet.
so i passed :D

I'm not sure the bumper covering the tyre is a requirement otherwise all the Clubman Kitcars eg Westfield wouldn't be able to be engineered.
A while a go I did find on the web the ADRs for front tyre coverage though (perhaps it was from a link on OL) anyway on TJ Wranglers they have this great big pieces of ugly plastic on the stock bumer which connect the the leading edge of the front guard. I believe this is to meet an ADR about minimum tyre coverage frontward (also applies rearward) in an arc around the wheel hub line. Say the flare/guard must cover the wheel in an arc 45degree forward and 60 degrees rearward from a vertical line from the centre of the whell hub (I just made those numbers up btw). Clear as mud? Ask google I guess. Anyway my Mahindra Jeep has a factory stubby bumper which the importer then bolted another bumper over the top - full width - with swept back bends on the end. I also read an ADR that the bumper must not have the possibility of "hooking" a pedestrian. Hence the swept back ends to get a 1950s Indian Jeep through 1990's ADRs.

Suggest an engineer if you are concerned else a complete bolt on over bumper?

I have an interest in this also for a build I'm doing. Does anybody know specifically what/which ADR's or other rules/regs that this breaches or more importantly what the rule/reg states? Not that I want to be a PITA, but so there is a better knowledge for us all in how to build to maintain these rules and still satisfy our own requirements.

ADR 69 is front crash protection - so it may fail that if applies to your vehicle.

Wouldnt the 40s age help?? if its pre 73??? isnt that when ADR started??

If you got defected for that it would be weak end of story.
i have never had any problems i reckon you would be sweet man.
