Insurance for 19yo
G'day guys and gals
Im about to start the process of sifting through all the insururance companies and was wondering if there were any any people out there around my age that have already been through this process and could let me know their experiencs. I have read most of the posts on insurance but most of you guys are over 25 and this makes it a bit hard to compare to insurance for me, as i am only 19.
Cheers

Depends on what you drive....if it's a stocker then most insurance companies will help you out just watch out for the excess. Most companies I came across would only insure my lifted rig with the allowance that no-one under 25 can drive it.
If it's modified your going to have some fun. Justcars seems to cover almost anyone any age but charge you big time for it.
I've a friend who got his Feroza insured with Alianze (2.5" suspension and 2" body lift) and I was with them as well, until 2 weeks later they cancelled mine saying the wouldn't cover my mods. I was only 2.5" Suspension at that stage too!! figure that one out
Then I went with AAMI but couldn't modify any further. I'm now with TCIS and they are happy with me so far (2" Body lifted now).

It sucks balls mate I had a modified car when I was 18 and insurance was a c%nt to get. I wound up going with RACQ by telling some little fibs I'd advise against this but it was my only option back then. What's your rig because that'll make a big difference.
Try justcars etc or that specialist 4wd insurance group (anyone supply the name and a link?) but their prices reflect their clients. What gets my goat is the penalties for small mods Someone drivin a 4by with sensible mods is likely to actually be a safe, good driver, car control is our hobby. Some crazy homie in a skyline is not and is probably gonna crash We get tarred with the same brush which pisses me off
mj wrote:I wound up going with RACQ by telling some little fibs
Doing this you may as well save your coin, as they wont pay out if you bullshit them. Insurance co's suck rectum.
Depending on your car, mods, drivin history and more, will tell if you will get insurance.
Just call around to the major players, and then once you have been given rediculous prices, try a few Insurance brokers.

probably your best bet is described above.

RACV.... never had any problems with them till recently. They wouldnt insure the 4x4 after I put the 308 in it, yet were fine about everything else that I had done (253 V8, SOA, Big tyres etc). Apparently its a new thing NOT to insure vehicles with motors lager than 4.5lits, I have since found 2 other companys that have the same beef with big motors.... so I said stuff em and fitted a 350 chev and go with out the insurance now!
Oh yeah... I was a "rating 1" driver for the whole time I was insured and never had an accident nor made a claim and thats after 20+ years behind the wheel !!!
There are 8 vehicles registered in my name and now none of em are insured... I was that pee d off with it all. I now put the same money I would have normally paid to em away every year on the same day (30/06/yr) into an account I seup, it will be touch n go for the first 2 or 3 years but after that

I'm a little confused - the third party insurance system is in place to protect other drivers/pedestrians/property, whatever the case may be, in case of an accident. Irrespective of fault, act of god, mechanical failure blah blah blah, if the vehicle you own is involved in an accident, and that same vehicle has mods that do not comply, or the RTA/DOT are not aware of them, wouldn't you be fined or charged or something because you were driving an uncertified vehicle (with modifications you were aware of) on a public road, and is the third party insurance system still going to cover you? The voluntary insurance (or compulsory if you have finance) that you take out will withdraw their insurance cover in the above instance, does the third party system have the same power to withdraw it's cover as well? Basically (without going into individual scenarios), are you still coverd by third party insurance if you drive a vehicle that has been previously discussed in this thread?
Built, not bought.
Maybe a poll should be started
If i was to have an accident my insurace company would:
1. pay me what its worth.
2. argue over a few think i had forgot to mention
3. tell me to get bent
4. whats insurance???
OR
If i was to have an accident I'd
1. leave it and wait for the money
2. remove some offending items off it
3. drag it home and put it back to stock
4. burn it and tell them it was stollen.
i know i'm not covered for a 2 inch body lift and had to fight for the coil lift on the ground of it being "off the shelf" aftermarket items. They only agreed when i called to end my cover.

i don't need no stinking quote for my sig. line!

maybe an anon call to an insurance co would be in order to ask...
I would have thought it would be the same as normal, or if you broke the law in anyway they could pull the pin on you.. ?
what insurance are you afetr? comprehensive, modified vehicle, third party?
I use AAMI for general third party etc, however for modified i used a company called VIGIL, they were sourced for me by an insurabce brochure, extremely leanient on modified vehicles. The guy on the phone actually told me to ring NRMA back and tell em where to go! (in regards to there previous quotes and information).

im just 18 (2 months ago!!! Finally ) and got the rover insured with RACV, it was a struggle o get insured though, as it has a 186 Holden donk in it, and other insurers classified this non standard engine as a 'High Powered Engine' or something shite like that,
In the end the car is registered under dads name, and im the 2nd nominated driver, listed to do 50% of the driving
Insurance really suks shit! but try around and get the best price!
Maybe try local 4x4 clubs and ask around who people insure cars with, might help?
Good luck anyways
Dave

Land Rover Discovery - GQ conversion underway

You must be kiddin Tell them to take it for a spin round the block and then have a think about that..... WANKERS :rofl
Lots of people go the way suggested above, ie under their parents name. How do your parents feel about that one I tried that but my old mans premium was huge He has an average history
yeah parents option is coool. i listed all my mods and they didn't ask any q's - then again not a great deal of mods. better if your parents have all their insurance with the one company, and your sister works in the insurance department
but honestly - whatever the cheapest rate is, i'm willing to pay. what price would you put on your pride and joy if it was stolen from a shopping centre car park.. or wheels stolen whilst broken down in Logan

That Vigil one looks interesting..
Website is at http://www.vigilins.com.au/vigil/default.asp
Thought I'd send em through a quote just to see what they can do for me (currently with TCIS, up in a few months).
Had a reply straight back just asking for some clarifications, will let you know how the quote compares for me...30yo tho...but still interesting

I am like a few of you guys...I hate insurance companies. I had my car broken into last year had the cd player, cds and gear stick knob (would you believe) taken and my insurance company told me it was going to cost $300.00 in excess. That was ok but then they told me that because I was making a claim my premium would go up and I wouldn't be able to get my rating 1. How pathetic is that? Sad thing is they are the cheapest insurance around. I don't know how I am going to go when I get the 4wd whether I may have to change insurers or what. I would suggest going through your parents if you possibly can.
dude, what happens when you run someone over and they sue you for say $2 000 000 in damages.
No third party or public liability is rediculous....
thats what your rego is for it includes a compulsary insurance for if you kill or mame yourself or someone then this pays out. othere insurance is for car damage only.
the best way to go the parents i nevered to but my brother did. im 24 and pay 250 for full comp with racv and they let have all my mods and more. i just ring them first if they will allow it or not. i got turbo, bullbar, winch,cd player cb's 33 inch tyres, and they are going to let me lift it two inches and put diff locks in. so im going to tell the about the body lift when its installed, and teh springs well its hard to tell with leave springs what was orginal ride hight.

you can't go without third party PERSONAL INJURY insurance, you need it to register the vehicle, in all states. and because it comes due at rego time, it is assumed (in NSW anyway) that because your vehicle has been inspected roadworthy then it is acceptable to insure for CTP. (greenslip). The CTP insurance covers any INJURY (and resulting loss of income etc) your vehicle causes, as long as the VEHICLE can be identified as at at fault in the accident. it might be stolen, modified, driven by a drunk driver, driven without the consent of the owner, or even without a driver - covered.
it all falls apart with third party PROPERTY insurance (where you're covered for any damage you do to other people's property) or COMPREHENSIVE insurance, where mods to your vehicle will become of more and more interest to your insurer. (some insurers also offer 'fire and theft' insurance which covers everything EXCEPT the damage YOU do to your own vehicle) - anyway my point, which has been a long time coming, is if you're a youngster and want a modified 4WD, there is not much benefit in buying comprehensive insurance - it's just too expensive (try up to around $3,500/year for a $15000 vehicle, plus maybe $1200 excess or more if you have a prang, it's just not worth it.) compared to around $500/year tops for third party property damage only insurance, they still want to know about mods but they're not so hard on you - they only want to know from a roadworthiness viewpoint, not from the point of having to pay to repair your mods if they get busted - they're more insuring YOU as a driver than the vehicle itself, the vehicle value doesn't come into it.
it's sad but true, young drivers do have more prangs, maybe because they spend a lot of time on the road (I drove almost 60,000km in first 12 months I owned a car!), maybe it's because they lack experience - so it's a good idea to have a CRAP car - not necessarily mechanically crappy but with crap bodywork etc, and accept that it will get knocked about - especially fi you intend to wheel it - hard or otherwise. get a few years experience on and off road, try real hard to avoid accidents involving insurance claims (like if you rear end a bint in a mirage, consider coughing up the three grand for a new bumper instead of making a claim), and in a few years, armed with experience, a little bit of no-claim bonus, and a newer, better 4 wheeler, go get some heavier duty insurance.
of course, my opinion is worth what you've paid for it.
cheers
Brian

Just Cars tends to be pretty good with insurance in Vic...
I was previously insured with RACV but they cancelled my policy when I called up and told them about my new mods to the car - stereo, bullbar and winch - which together exceeded more than 1/3 of the market value of the vehicle (which isn't hard to do with a sierra)... This made the car into too great a 'theft risk' and my policy will terminated within 30 days...
If you do get your car insured under your parents name, make sure you get your name put down as a registered driver for the vehicle - even if it means paying some extra doh on their policy to make it happen - because when you do get yourself your own policy - you will have racked up a few years of insured driving and that will go towards your rating i.e. paying a lilttle bit here, will save you big time later...
Do the maths on your quotes from insurance companies - i worked out that with a sierra within 3 years i would have bought the car again with the amount racv wanted for comp insurance... this didn't seem like much of an option to me...
But it is wise to have 3rd party. If you hit the back of a bmw or something - at leas there is a chance that you won't be paying for it for the first 10 years of your working life.

here in Vic we HAVE to by law pay COMPULSARY 3rd party insurance, its part of the regristration form.....
Current one arrived last week and reads....
Registration fee..................................$157.00
TAC Premium*(inc $15.90 GST)...........$175.00
insurance duty....................................$ 17.50
...................................total due..........$349.50
If I drove it around unregistered and got caught then I'd be fined for ..
1: unregistered vehicle
2: uninsured Vehicle
3: unroadworthy vehicle
I'd also be charged with the more serious crime of attempting to defraud the state govt... somehow its seen that way if you dont pay em !!
