G52 - imminent failure?

Post by daveo »

its common knoweledge that the 5th gear in these boxes is poo. my hilux, 110 000km, is developing a whine in 5th, and its slowly gettting worse. is this a sign of imminent catastrophic failure? i know a mate of mine who has the same model lux lost his 5th at ~110 000 which then proceded to screw the entire box.

so what i want to know is
- is it on its way out?
- should i consider a rebiuld before it explodes, potentailly saving money?
- should i just wait till it goes and replace with another G52?
- wait till it blows and replace with a R151 and marks adaptor?

cheers,
dave

bit of a dig from the past but hopefully somebody can help me now.

just been fiddling round with my ute and the gearbox os definitely getting worse. took the shifter boots off and went for a drive to get a better listen

3rd gear - there is a definite grind just before it slots into gear (?synchro) and when under load is sounds like crap.

5th gear - sounds horrendous under load, very noisy

1st, 2nd and 4th appear to be fine, dont make any abnormal sounds

how much could i expect to pay for a rebuild? how much for a rebuilt R151 and who makes adapter plates to suit the 5L engine?

thanks

I should have mentioned that a whine in any one gear only can also mean the case hardening has worn off from the teeth and without it, the massive increase in friction causes the metal to fatigue and crack. had this happen in a 5 speed nissan box, it whined for a week, then spat 5th gear and smashed the casing. very messy. might not be the case, but its worth checking out.

Mate has a turbo 2.8 diesel lux, destroyed 3rd gear, got a rebuilt G52 for around $1200 installed, destroyed that within a month, took it back and got a brand new r151f installed for $3500 (they refunded the dead g52), which included a new crossmember, and new driveshafts.
Cheers,
Dan.

well it got pulled down today. bad news. totally rooted. first and second are gone, totally seized, mainshaft farked etc etc. also need a new clutch (which i suspected). to rebuild mine would cost >$3000 so going for a rebuilt box and daikin heavy duty clutch.

there goes my mid year travel plans!

cheers mate but have sorted it out already though. also dont know if the ratios in the G52 behind a 22r would be suitable for behind a 5L

from what i have read the R151 isnt as straight forward as expected, would need an adaptor plate, lengthen front drive shaft and shorten rear, recut the gear stick holes in the trans tunnel. also they are more expensive to get and im going to be in a fair bit of debt as it is which sucks when you are a student who can only work ~10hrs a week. also need the car back on the road asap and also given that the current box lasted 120,000km, with i suspect a fair bit of abuse by the previous owner, i reckon that it will last me untill i sell the vehicle. if circumstances were different then i would have done it but oh well.
